trying to develop a zotero plugin is the most dogbrained developer experience in the universe, but i am not allowed to help with the docs because i haven't been doing it for several years. so i wonder why it's so hard.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

"how do i add an item to the context menu when you right click on an item"
simply

  • find the unlinked single documentation page that has any developer docs on it https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/zotero_7_for_developers
  • read the entire thing to find that it is nowhere to be found, but all similar documentation says to just go read the source
  • walk backwards searching for strings of other items that are on the context menu
  • fail
  • find something that should be related to the context menu
  • find the component that contains all the items in the zotero main window
  • fail
  • search for literally all onClick events in the whole zotero repo
  • SOMEHOW STILL FAIL
  • give up because you have to go to a meeting and you've been trying to do one single thing for 5 hours.
jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar
  • on your way out the door, FINALLY FIND THE DOM ELEMENT that represents the context menu
  • it uses a now-deprecated API that the docs tell you not to use.

This is cool. Wade Harper’s lab are experimenting with publishing direct to their lab website.
https://harperlab.pubpub.org

There is one pub up at the moment which is also on bioRxiv
https://harperlab.pubpub.org/pub/nlrp3/release/1

An editor has been assigned and it looks like peer review will be totally open.

The first author Robert Hollingsworth has written a thread on the bad place about his motivations behind this expt (seek it out if you're interested!)

usually i try not to make a big deal out of the entertainment industrial complex and its shit, but i have seen in a bunch of personal cases how much influence talk shows like these have over peoples perception of the world and i gotta say i think that in this dystopia you could sort of do a lot worse than having a dude like jon stewart doing an interview with lina khan like this on a mass broadcast medium

That’s it. The exit strategy for that AI booster cult company is to train a future generation of large language models to detect all the cases where artist A’s output was inadvertently incorporated via LLM output into work by artist B, and then shop the lawsuit to A’s heirs.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@Unixbigot it would be an unbelievably low yield scam but it would be a wonderfully shortsighted one too, so odds are not zero

Are there actually neuroscientists who dont believe that most invertebrates, fish, etc. have lowercase-c consciousness, an internal subjective experience of the world? Is the alternative that they are just reflex machines? Why wouldnt we make the opposite assumption - that animals that have a complex enough nervous system to run a whole body thats responsive to their ecosystem are "conscious" until proven otherwise. But what would the point be of proving otherwise? I guess im just deeply uninterested in semantic games that exclude most of the animal kingdom from the assumption of mere subjectivity.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

I dont feel like you need sophisticated arguments or evidence to suggest that the ant foraging through your kitchen has some internal sense of what its doing, whats its experiencing, even if you dont believe they have a fully reflexive self-reflective memory and humanlike conception of self. Its a much more interesting question to me to ask what they do experience than what they don't experience, and I dont know what the negative assumption gets you except for perpetual surprise that all animals are more sophisticated than that assumption.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@futurebird RIGHT. like it is of course not a subset of human consciousness, it's infinitely COOLER than that because it totally evades the outer walls of our consciousness. To flatten that into a binary "do they have x or don't they" is the most boring way you could think about that in my opinion, instead of "of course they have x, and what is their x like?"

ZachWeinersmith, to random
@ZachWeinersmith@mastodon.social avatar

Wouldn't post it on that other similar site, because it'd result in inflammatory stuff, but... why do we care what college students do or don't protest? I mean like if a substantial Rotary Club in Idaho had a loud offensive argument about something in the zeitgeist, I don't imagine it'd make news anywhere. Possibilities:

  1. These people are perceived as future leaders and so we want to know their values
  2. These people represent the youth so we want to know their values
  3. Anger-bait?
jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith
I mean there is a long history of campus activism in the US tied to a lot of radical movements, legislation and judicial precedent re: first amendment, and our collective perceptions of the meaning of education and youth. So in addition to the protests themselves being important, the short and longterm context is too.

Oh yes, im talking about cooperative infrastructures like p2p systems atop the internet, not the backbone, which is a whole different and yes from what I understand heavily predated environment. We'll get there. P2p systems of course naturally extend into meshnet systems...

Early prototype of Mastodon thread viewer:

https://thesamovar.github.io/masto-thread-view/test.html

Just paste the URL of the thread into the box at the top and hit the "linear thread view" button below and it will give you a view of the thread with hierarchical replies sorted by how many engagements they got (reposts + favourites + replies).

It's very early days so it doesn't yet show any images, the design is not ideal, not optimised for mobile, etc. But I already find this useful for getting a feel of big threads.

My aim here is to give people a better way to navigate overwhelmingly large threads and to allow for a sort of archive of interesting threads. If we want to make Mastodon into a viable option for having scientific debates (e.g. alternative to peer review), we need some way to make them more accessible to outsiders and to surface the most interesting and relevant content.

So I'm particularly interested in hearing suggestions for features or other ideas on how to display threads in the context of long lasting discussions with some permanence to them.

At the moment it's just a very simple idea, but I have other ideas for how to display threads that are a bit wackier and I'll add these as extra buttons as and when I work on this. I'm also going to see how feasible it is to make this into a bookmarklet so you can just hit the 'render thread' bookmark in your browser and open a tab with this. Should be straightforward.

If you're interested, please feel free to post suggestions and issues either here or on github: https://github.com/thesamovar/masto-thread-view

I think the instances being different from one another is really good! One of the strengths of the fedi. If we prioritized sameness for the ease of joining then wed just all be using base mastodon. Pulling code upstream to base masto is notoriously difficult and slow. IMO People should explore different instances, and we should be better about signposting their differences and swapping code horizontally. We try our best over here: https://wiki.neuromatch.social/Mastodon/Hacking

In this case I dont see the need to make it either/or - we can embed something that also can be used as one would a website (going to a website == using this tool as is == viewing a post on another instance)

I am trying to make my place more cozy after visiting my brothers place which was very cozy, and so I am trying to have stuff like "lamps" and "rugs" but the problem is I start looking and then spend 4 hours trying to find the weirdest lamp and then I end up with zero lamps.

What would you consider as the most recognizable bitmap fonts in tech history?

I’m imagining stuff like:

  • the arcade/Atari font
  • Chicago (Mac, then iPod)
  • VCR/video equipment fonts
  • Minecraft font
  • IBM PC fonts (MDA, VGA, stuff like that)
  • perhaps System font from Windows 3.x
  • Commodore 64, just because of the sheer popularity of the machine

What am I missing?
