A friend just sent me this terrifying video of boulders crashing down onto a road during the #earthquake in #Taiwan 😵

Dashcam video shows a few cars on a hillside road as they dodge huge boulders falling down onto the road.

I'm looking for some good light undergraduate-level books/articles in English about Taiwan under the Japanese and during the White Terror. History, culture, I would even love recommendations of short fiction if you have any.

Thanks

Breaking: House #SpeakerJohnson essentially kills the Senate's national security supplemental.

Johnson says he won't bring the bill up for a vote. Instead, the #House will work on its own legislation.

That means no aid to #Ukraine, #Israel, #Gaza, and #Taiwan for now.

Good morning to readers.

Here in , some people, are already preparing for the possibility of a war with .

The Kuma Academy trains Taiwanese civilians to understand modern warfare, first aid and evacuation planning.

The classes sell out within hours.

The idea is to increase resilience – to be more like Ukraine, its founder Shen told me, so that if an invasion or blockade by China happened, they’d have the skills to resist.

When SARS broke out in #Taiwan in ‘03, the WHO denied Taiwan’s request for the virus’ DNA to combat it.

The WHO told Taiwan’s health minister at the time to ask China.

#China refused the request and 137 people died in the following four months.

Taiwan has been denied WHO membership for five decades due to political reasons, says Dr. Chien-Jen, Taiwan’s Minister of Health at the time of the SARS outbreak.

This has cost Taiwan innocent lives.

Good morning to readers; #Taipei remains in Taiwanese hands.

The Taiwanese island of Kinmen lies just over 1 mile from the mainland, which would be a flashpoint in any conflict between #Taiwan and #China.

Meet the people living under constant reminders of a potential invasion.

Tomorrow the people of Taiwan will head to the polls to vote between the ruling DPP, the KMT, and the TPP.

Don’t know the parties or candidates?

Today I had planned to catch the sunrise, but I ended up seeing something far rarer: a Brocken spectre. This divine phenomenon only occurs in quite specific atmospheric conditions. The viewer has to be in a position where they are higher than the clouds with strong sunlight shining down behind them. I had been hoping to see one for years.

Over the last 2+ years, everytime I got a press release or saw a Tweet about a global ranking or report from an ngo or non-profit, I checked to see if it included #Taiwan or not, and added it to a spreadsheet.

I found that #climate & #environment groups were the most likely to erase Taiwan or include it as part of #China, while #humanrights and #pressfreedom NGOs all included Taiwan.

Wrote about this, with insights from Taiwanese experts, for @hkfp

I was interviewed by VOA in a short segment on what the election means for Indigenous voters. It is hard to know how much of an impact we can make as scholars when we do these interviews, but here I think I was able to shift the story a little bit, pointing out that it isn't just one party that exploits Indigenous identity for political ends.

Been visiting #Taiwan & just want to say again how refreshing it's been to be in a #masking society. 😷

~50% of the general public #masks indoors AND outdoors. I'm NEVER the ONLY person in a #mask, as is common in the U.S.

Masking can reach up to 90-95% on the subway during rush hour.

Store employees, hotel & restaurant staff, basically anyone in the service industry almost always #masked.

Taxis have air purifiers!

I'm ready to go home, but not looking forward to facing covid denial again.
