came across this photo in the KITLV collection while looking for images of opera houses for my upcoming talk. although it looks harmless, it's actually a manifestation of Dutch cruelty and racism. This was the set for the opera put on by prisoners in the Dutch concentration camp for Indonesian communists and nationalists circa 1928, in Boven-Digoel in #Papua. Lots of other white men, including some of my husband’s [#journalism colleagues, were quick to comment that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Well, that’s bullshit. Even for people who did recognize the shootings as an act of #racism, I had to explain to them that it’s not just racism. It’s a #racialized#misogyny that’s very, very specific to #AsianWomen. ]

The U.S. Federal Indian boarding school system ran from 1819-1969 & included 408 federal schools.

Even after the practice was abolished, #BritishColumbia had its own #legislation preventing First Nations from holding property.
