🚀 We're happy to announce DW Innovation has just launched on Mastodon!
Follow us for discussions on media tech and journalism, from ideas and concepts to prototypes and unfolding trends – and ethical dilemmas. Let's dive into the world of digital media together!
Innovation is dead. In its place, companies just add internet connectivity and voice control in places it’s absolutely not needed so they can pretend extracting data and profit is the same as progress. No one needs a “smart” bidet.
Ostensibly to help reduce stock dilution caused by stock awards to core staff (including the CEO), once again (as I've pointed out before), it shows that Uber's #business model is nothing to do with investment in #innovation & everything to do with #wagetheft & expoiting #workers.
Uber doesn't need any tech innovation or new kit, so investment not required; just keeps sh*ting on the drivers to make a profit!

This excellent comic on the history of Luddism by Tom Humberstone https://thenib.com/im-a-luddite led me to this site with folks developing 'Glaze' which is a thing artists are using to mess with AI trying to scrape their art. Check it out here:
A Dutch scientist has developed a new type of battery that uses salt instead of lithium, which could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. Salt batteries are safer, cheaper, and more eco-friendly than lithium batteries, as they use abundant and non-flammable materials that are easy to dispose of and recycle. The salt battery has four times the energy storage capacity of lithium, and can be charged and discharged thousands of times.

In an extensive report on #PrivateEquity in the FT this morning, this little data nugget appears:
in the decade up to 2022, the creation of 'value' in PE controlled firms, almost entirely reflected a rise in the scale of activity, not any increase in margins, or increases in #productivity.
In other words despite claims for #innovation & productive reorganisation, PE just increased turnover... which while not necessarily easy, is a very different & less unique story for #investors!
