After watching OpenAI's presentation and, even more, an excerpt from Google's presentation yesterday, I asked myself: is this AI, according to the big tech companies (especially Google - for OpenAI it's their core business, so I understand their perspective), truly what users want and need, or is it just another method to lock people into using their technologies, which are not easily self-hostable?
I'm not arguing for or against it, but I noticed that (almost) the entire Google I/O yesterday was focused on this...
@stefano I'm very cautious when it comes to emerging technologies due to this. I'm sure we've all seen our fair share of how companies like to vendor lock customers into utilizing a feature out of convenience. (Think about AWS for instance, there are so many case in point examples of how certain cloud providers try to lock you in to using their platform because the tools manage things for you) I think one of the biggest things that pro and anti ai people can agree on is that something like ChatGPT is a security risk due to the fact it very easily can leak confidential information fed into it. I've heard from my friends who work at companies that utilize LLMs for a specific purpose that is one of their primary concerns, and is why they shifted from using things like OpenAI to having an in house LLM that they can tightly control the dataset for. This view, vigorously advocated by the tech industry, has shaped the public discourse in the United States, where the country’s thriving tech economy is often associated with a staunch commitment to free markets. US lawmakers have also traditionally embraced this perspective, which explains their hesitancy to regulate the tech industry to date. The European Union has chosen another path, regulating the digital economy with stringent data privacy, antitrust, content moderation, and other digital regulations designed to shape the evolution of the tech economy towards European values around digital rights and fairness. According to the EU’s critics, this far-reaching tech regulation has come at the cost of innovation, explaining the EU’s inability to nurture tech companies and compete with the US and China in the tech race. However, this Article argues that the association between digital regulation and technological progress is considerably more complex than what the public conversation, US lawmakers, tech companies, and several scholars have suggested to date. For this reason, the existing technological gap between the US and the EU should not be attributed to the laxity of American laws and the stringency of European digital regulation.
