In about an hour (16:00 BST) I'll be live at https://twitch.tv/miblo

This'll be more tech setup stuff, trying to resolve the video and audio issues from last time. I'll incidentally be playing the usual video game music on guitar just to give us something to work with.

@miblo@mas.to avatar

Yo @Cognessence, apropos of what we were talking about guitar playing the other day, I reckon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZJ2PN_b_sI may tickle your fancy.

So the issue I'm having is that I only have one "set" of space armor..

I can make them in different colors but that alone is a little boring

So I think I'm also gonna add samurai armor for example :blobcatgiggle:

There's no publisher who tells me what to do and the game is gonna be free anyways so I can whatever right :catblush:

Later on I shall create capes on request also!

A nice pride cape seems a great idea

Very soon (20-ish mins) I'll be playing some video game music live on guitar at https://twitch.tv/miblo

Pretty much a test stream to try out my new Solid State Logic SSL 2 interface. Sounding good so far. Let's see how it records.

stats are out this week, and there’s some new detail on membership density by age group, so I’ve been able to do some rough estimates of the time-varying age profile of the UK movement…

This isn’t quite the story we’re in the habit of telling ourselves!

We all know we have a problem bringing young workers into unions, right? Well… yes: density is indeed lowest among the youngest brackets of the workforce - that’s true (and for reasons not simply to do with age)…

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@drandrewv2 Interesting! I wonder if somehow showing the travel of people up through the bands as they age would communicate anything useful? If you know what I mean?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@drandrewv2 Ah yes, with each frame showing a single year's "pyramid"? Yeah, I can imagine this potentially showing something interesting!

Another option may be just diagonal lines cutting through this same graph? Like the attached mock-up, but with each line able to change angle every 5 years to track them up each band?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@drandrewv2 Well, yeah, I realised I actually should have enough information to do the change of angle too!

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@drandrewv2 So sorry to drip-feed this (can you tell I rarely get to do this kinda thing?!) but I realised we can track almost everyone at least some of the way.

This seems to show quite nicely that everyone <= 34 in 2004 were joined by slightly more people in their age group by 2024. And the opposite for 35 and up. But 35–44 in 2004 were pretty consistent for those first 10 years?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@drandrewv2 Yeah, to make up for the over 65s leaving?

I mean, the timing of the 2004 35–44 lot shrinking between 2014 and 2019 smells a bit fishy to me. Maybe that momentum got affected by their preoccupation with the B-word? Although I guess the same thing happened with the 5-year groups before and after them at the same age. Not sure!

New audio gear incoming. To replace the sketchy Zoom UAC-2 I've muddled through with for the last 6½ years, I'm dipping my toes into Solid State Logic with their SSL 2: https://solidstatelogic.com/products/ssl2

I've spotted dropouts with playback for a while, honestly, but now that I'm recording videos of music playing, and finding dropouts ruining these recordings (e.g. throughout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTqfFfTM_GE), the time has come.

Hopefully give it a spin on stream next week.

Any users on here? I am (desperately) trying to make a cd cover cutout template. I've made the shape to be cut out from several squares, but I would now like to get rid of the inner parts of those squares ( I only need the outline of the whole shape because it's for a cutout). How the hoot do I do that?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@madskjeldgaard Could you set the "Fill" to "No paint"? Under "Fill and Stroke" (Ctrl+Shift+f).

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@madskjeldgaard Ah sorry, yeah, I'd misunderstood. To make this all into one shape:

• Select everything
• Press x, for "Shape Builder Tool"
• Click and drag over all the bits
• Press Enter

Well, if the Conservatives have indeed been trying to throw the next General Election – as it's looked like to me for a while now – picking 4th July for it makes perfect sense.

• Probably one of the more memorable dates (along with 11th September) that isn't a national holiday here.

• Summer, so we're inclined to be out and about, and perhaps swing by our polling stations.

• Not yet the school holidays, so school-age families mostly won't be out of the country.

This morning for some reason the first thing I did was decide to listen to a random #Sega Game Gear soundtrack. I picked Alien Syndrome because it was the first I saw listed and I enjoyed it immensely.

@famousblueben Oh nice! I don't have any Game Gear ones brewing, but if Mega Drive soundtracks cut the mustard just as well for you, played on guitar, I'm aiming to upload a video including tracks from a couple of them in a day or two.

The #1001OtherAlbums index is finished!!! It only took me 3 months, lol. :blobcatsipsweat:

My question is: was no one pressing records in 1966? There's only one album in our list from that year (Alton Ellis) and it's not even a full album, it's a compilation that includes some singles released in '66.

https://1001otheralbums.com/index/

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Well, no, the original was Cher, written by Sonny: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang_Bang_(My_Baby_Shot_Me_Down)

I didn't realise she was around back in the 60s!

This "Spellbinder" does seem well regarded, though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spellbinder_(album)

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Ah yeah, smart. Also, back then maybe the date of the sheet music's publication (soon-ish after composition, who knows?) was the equivalent of today's album release date?

Aww, really? You know, go on then, I'll nominate it! I for one would've been glad to discover it in the list. Hopefully more people do.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Oh yeah, me too.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Check out how they mixed Cher's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13j8kBehIj4

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Amazing, cheers!

Yeah, maybe it depends how we slice it? Either keep it close and only include, you know, "album era" albums; or consider their function as a recording of music and broaden it out to let other eras bring in music recorded in the media available to them.

By the way, on defining stuff, I wonder if you'd be into this poll (17 hours left) by @sean_ae from Autechre: https://mas.to/deck/@sean_ae/112455610043113581
