New study kills the myth of ‘Man the Hunter’ - women hunted in nearly 80% of surveyed forager societies.

Information about forager societies (allowing to reinforce the myth) mostly came from ethnographies written by 18th to 20th century white Euro-American men who visited communities and followed the local men around, often paying less attention to whatever women were doing.

#Cats first worked their way into human hearts thousands of years ago when the African wildcat realized the evolutionary advantage of sticking close to humans.

And if you have a cat, this comes to no surprise:

They continue to be master manipulators doing things like changing their purrs and “meow” to curry human favor.

Many people have learned that horses first came to the Americas when Spanish explorers brought them here about 500 years ago.

But fossils show horses have been in North America for centuries, including during the Americas during the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago.

Only 22% of Americans believe humans evolved without God's intervention. 40% are straight-up creationists.

With poll results like these how Americans can hope to solve any complex problems that ail them? Without critical thinking skills in the population how a #democracy can even function?

How complex problems like #ClimateChange or #inequality could ever be addressed in an informed way?

One of my favourite articles on the of human behaviour:

igisho, to science

🧬 7 years ago, scientists proved that they can shave a cell down to its most basic elements, creating a life form with the smallest genome that allows it to grow and divide in lab.

We now have proof that even simplest self-replicating organisms on earth can adapt.

During 300 days of evolution in the lab (the generational equivalent of 40,000 human years), the "minimal cells" regained all the vitality they had sacrificed.

If humans are indeed the most evolved species, why do so many of us suffer from developmental or genetic diseases? Phys.org explains why, unlike our ape ancestors, humans are still paying the price for losing our tails. https://flip.it/DX01o9

Hello mastodon!
I'm a German biologist, currently doing a #PhD in Functional Morphology at the University of Antwerp. I study the biomechanics of beak movement in songbirds. 🐦

I'm here to connect with other scientists, share some bits and pieces about my research, and hopefully meet some nice people that are also interested in #animals, #birds, #evolution, #biomechanics, and #opensource software.

Happy to share the latest manuscript from our lab, in which we propose that eukaryotes evolved from a genomic chimera of Asgard archaea and giant viruses.

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.04.22.590592v1

This is a controversial topic, but we believe we have strong evidence to suggest a critical viral role in eukaryogenesis.

"The insect world is full of species of parasitic wasps that spend their infancy eating other insects alive. And for reasons that scientists don’t fully understand, they have repeatedly adopted and tamed wild, disease-causing viruses and turned them into biological weapons. Half a dozen examples already are described, and new research hints at many more."
