Open source folks, I need your help. There's that number, floating around the internet for YEARS now, that claims that ~70% of modern software components are made up of open source software.
I cannot, for the life of me, find the actual source for that. As in, who arrived at that estimation and how.
Can someone please help me track that down or put me in touch with someone who might know?
TIL about another community on Slack who is now being asked to pay thousands to preserve basic functionality 😬
Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.
When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.
FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.
We're excited to announce the release of GNOME 45! 🎉
This release brings many exciting updates thanks to the hard work of contributors all over the world! https://youtu.be/47aZgF6xmS0
🚨 ⚠️ Emergency PSA: A critical security exploit was discovered in the xz package recently, used for compression and decompression on nearly all Linux distributions.
Rawhide users ARE impacted and should immediately STOP using Rawhide until the package update is fully rolled back. (1/3)
I'm about to retire (again...) in a few weeks. I'm looking out for opportunities to give back. I'm interested in either speaking/teaching/workshops (very willing to travel) or any #OpenSource or #NonProfit groups that would like some UX help. I'd appreciate a boost!
I suspect quite a few of you might be keen on open-source 😀
Unfortunately, #opensource has a funding problem, and so a lot of people struggle to find time to commit to their projects.
In many regions though (esp the EU) there is money available to fund you doing open source full time! Particularly in a few different areas related to what the EU is calling "Next Generation Internet" (#NGI) tech.
All these are open for applicants either right now or imminently:
In my talks and discussions about the role of Open Source maintainers, I usually list a number of reasons why maintainers might quit or otherwise reduce their involvement.
"The Russian army destroyed my house" hasn't been on that list yet 😐 🇺🇦
When anyone spends their resources making something and then gives it away for free they should be greeted firstly with gratitude. They should be greeted secondly with gratitude. They should be greeted lastly with gratitude.
Too much #FOSS#OpenSource community rage and contributor burnout stems from a strange forgetfulness that no one has to contribute anything this way. It's always a wonder. Let's chill out and be a little more kind and a lot more grateful.
There was already suspicion that LLMs generated a large batch of bogus CVEs not long ago. I suspect that CVE-2023-38898 which targeted #Python and wasn't reported to the Python Security Response Team was a part of that batch.
Now curl gets explicit proof that "security researchers" are submitting reports direct from an LLM without any double-checking. As if handling vulnerabilities wasn't hard enough for #OpenSource maintainers! 😡
Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces! We’re excited that #StandardNotes will be joining the Proton family to bring end-to-end encrypted note-taking to Proton users.
Today we're celebrating the 26th anniversary of GNOME 🎉🎉
Thank you to all our outstanding contributors and community members for helping make the #GNOME project what it is today!
The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁
Let's not squander it!
A sold out#PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.
Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.
