@slimbook has packed this with exciting features like:

fedora,

If Fedora 40 had a headlining change, it might be @kde Plasma 6. The KDE SIG have brought over all the hard work from that community to give you a solid desktop experience from day 1.

We're also pushing technology forward by making this release Wayland-only, though X11 apps will still work!

Plasma 6 is also available for our Kinoite users. :kinoite:

fedora,

We are proud of the stable reputation that Fedora Workstation has built over the years. We hope to add to that with Fedora Workstation 40!

Workstation brings @gnome 46 to users with tweaks to the Settings and Files apps. You can now use Remote Login to connect to a computer even if it doesn't have an active session.

@fedora @gnome you didn't mention gnome correctly :neocat_floof_explode:

fedora,

@max thanks for catching that!

fedora,

Silverblue and Fedora Atomic users - here's a guide on how to rebase to Fedora 40.

The graphical example used is for Silverblue, but if you follow the terminal instructions they will work on any Fedora Atomic Desktop. Just pay attention to use the name of your variant where applicable.

If anything goes bad, you can rollback to Fedora 39. Additionally you can pin your current image if you need to go back after a few updates.

Fedora IoT 40 got some cool under-the-hood changes. :fedora_iot:

First is that Fedora IoT now uses the unified core model, making them the last rpm-ostree variant to make the switch.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_IoT_Unified_Core

CORRECTION: The bootable container image change did not end up making it in Fedora 40.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedora "You will literally be swapping to newer and newer container images when you update rather than managing independent packages and dependencies." isn't quite right. IoT was already an atomic release. But it's switched from the original ostree technology to the new bootable OCI container approach. the ultimate user experience is much the same or improved, but the implementation is actually pretty different.

ikkeT,
@ikkeT@mementomori.social avatar

@fedora does it mean that one could rebase from IoT to CoreOD? I installed years ago IoT, but don't really need zezere. Actually it kept topping CPU for months, so I could just swap this vm to coreos if possible.

fedora,

@ikkeT that's a question worth asking because they are both server-oriented OSes that use rpm-ostree. Contributors on the forum would know best.
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/

But if you experiment and find out the answer we (person behind this account) would love to know.

deflockcom,
@deflockcom@mastodon.social avatar

@fedora is don’t understand the newer and newer packages

fedora,

@deflockcom when you install Fedora IoT you're starting with a base image. When you update Fedora IoT, a new image will download. The "update" is that rpm-ostree will now boot off the new image you just installed instead of the image you were previously using.

fedora,

Don't forget about all of our other spins and labs that have also updated to Fedora 40. 👀

For Fedora Spins we have

For Fedora Labs we have

You have a lot of options, alright lol

@fedora Cosmic should be available in not too long when System76 releases their Ubuntu based distro. Please make an available spin for Cosmic as well.

@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedora @slimbook that looks awesome, just need AMD CPU+GPU options, especially 14”.

@fedora @kde @gnome @cb I ran my old sets of servers Fujitsu Siemens 470’s and HP DL 140 G3’s on FC4 through to F22. I use Armbian on BananaPi M3’s these days.

@fedora @kde @gnome

Upgrading broke things in some surprising ways. Most (not all) icons are gone in my Plasma panels now. It's a good excuse for me to finally play with #sway and go full #wayland though, which has been excellent 😁. I suspect it's my config that broke as opposed to some flaw in the new release (or maybe both?).

Thanks to everyone on these projects for your hard work. You're making a difference and pushing open source forward!

@fedora Burning an .iso right now for a fresh install, been looking forward to new gnome-shell/mutter for a while and with my intel/NVIDIA setup, once the new NVIDIA drivers land, I should be in Linux Gnome Nvidia Heaven!

Thanks to all the devs, volunteers, engineers, and everyone in between for making this happen, the work they all do is beyond appreciated, thank you! Now off I go to file a bunch of bug reports (kidding!) 😁

EndlessOS,

@fedora rebrand for almost* all "atomic" desktops, but ironically not Silverblue (@gnome) and Kinoite
(@kde) ✌️😏
