@Linux4Everyone .. I still can’t figure out if this is a different package or a downgrade from the old version that is included in Nobara : https://forum.linuxguides.de/core/index.php?attachment/5151-bildschirmfoto-vom-2023-07-16-11-35-12-png/

Anyone who is reading this plays #Linux games on their TV in the living room? What's your setup? Do you just have #SteamDeck hooked-up with a dock or do you use Steam Link software on your TV to stream #VideoGames from your gaming PC or do you have a "Steam Machine" type of a dedicated device just for TV #gaming? I wish to hear about it.

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth @berkough .. sunshine/moonlight are about the lowest lag I’ve found that is Linux friendly.... not perfect lag, and UX is not as clean as just steam link.. but not so bad. Also everything should be on wired LAN. Still for me the steam deck is just easier and perf is fine for most 1080p. (Parsec was best I found for streaming windows but limited compatibility)

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth @berkough , they fixed most the UI scaling lag, but I haven’t tried 4k. There are some display settings to turn on/off UI acceleration, which helped in the past. Also I sometimes have to set “Native” resolution (instead of “Default”) per game in some cases to get 1080p instead of 720p. For 4k, you may want to force 1080p with FSR upscaling in either deck settings or in-game. You might need to experiment. Usually 30fps max at 1080p.

If you stream games on Twitch and make #Gaming clips on youtube, but you aren’t a YT partner (less than 1000 subs) and you have 10 regular viewers on Twitch and you REALLY love what you do, can you technically consider it your career if you really believe in it?

I don’t want to put my definition of career meaning here so I don’t put words into your mouth. I need to know if the above can be considered a career.

#VideoGames

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth .. A career is a personal & subjective thing, so you have to decide. To me, it is usually a long-term path/goal of being your main “work”endeavor(s), but does not need to be full time. Versus a hobby, the goal should be to bring in some money, but your success goal (or outcome) may not always be profit. If you start small, but progress towards long term goals, you could still consider it your career. Also, career paths can change if your goals (or outcomes) change.

Please correct me if I am not understanding this correctly: Google has announced that when people search for something that happens to be available on my webpage, it will now use “AI” to give people a simplified summary of my text instead of offering them a link to visit my webpage.

Okay, so why should I even bother having a webpage if nobody will ever find it?

From now on, we will say: "Use your preferred search engine, or Google." I am sick and tired of this shit, we need to go back to 1997.

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth .. In theory this should backfire on Google. The only incentive that sites have to allow Google to crawl is the clickthrough they get . No more clickthrough and people should block google (or they will stop putting content up as you’ve stated).

That said, in practice, probably things will just continue and google will do what it wants.

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@geerlingguy This looks awesome, cost/energy-efficient, fast-enough, and I love my RPi5. I am looking to build a new SSD/NVMe NAS. Unforunately I'm still looking for a similar cost (non-ARM) option that can run official Proxmox & TrueNAS.

(Admitedly, I don't really need a big NAS OS, as my current NAS+Homelab is just a Miniforum X500 + 2.5G USB + Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 PRORAID 4 with Proxmox serving sshfs to remotes, and mounted as volumes into containers/vm's, but would be fun to try TrueNAS.)

So how many seasons will the showrunners of 3 Body Problem (Netflix, March 21) need to tell the whole story?

Alexander Woo: "So the hope would be we get to tell the whole story—whether that’s three seasons, four seasons, we don’t know exactly yet. It would have to be at least three seasons.”

wook,

@TheSpaceshipper .. hmm. Watching the trailers I saw some scenes that happen towards the end of 3body (just like the Chinese tv show). Maybe they mean 3 seasons to get through all 3 books?

I made a new blog post, and in it I show how I build a device to monitor the voltage of a 12V battery and share it over the Internet. Something that might be useful for remote astrophotography rigs or when building off-grid power installations. I'm using a Raspberry Pi Pico and some basic circuitry to make it all work. Take a look!

https://stfn.pl/blog/22-pico-battery-level/

#RaspberryPi #RaspberryPiPico #offgrid #blog #soldering #astrophotography

A Pi Pico, two electronic boards and a lot of cables in a small white box. From the box goes a bunch of cables ending with an XT60 plug. This is the finished device that measures the voltage of a 12v battery.

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@stfn @w84death nice! My 12V car battery died and it would have been nice to have a monitor/alerts on it.

Missed this a couple of weeks ago from Consumer Reports -

"How to Turn Off Smart TV Snooping Features"

All smart TVs—from Samsung, LG, you name it—collect personal data. These TV privacy settings limit what manufacturers learn.

https://www.consumerreports.org/electronics/privacy/how-to-turn-off-smart-tv-snooping-features-a4840102036/

Another approach is to use nothing on the TV itself, and feed video in from another source entirely.

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

(UPDATE: Big apologies to Roku. Checked my notes & it was Vizio ACR fingerprinting.)

@tychotithonus @sethsec @bbbhltz . yup. Vizio definitely does fingerprinting so even if you use their external device they’ll track everything you do (if the signal goes through them). They grant access to that data to third parties for real-time targeting. Not sure if there are safe external devices, but I would assume Amazon FireTV is heavily tracking you too.

    Just a clarification since I am seeing a bunch of misleading headlines go by:
    Fedora is not "Dropping X11".

    In the upcoming Fedora 40 release (due next may), Plasma 6 will be shipped and not offer a X11 session (Only Wayland).

    All the existing X11 packages will still exist, other desktops may have X11 sessions, X11 applications will still work via XWayland on Wayland desktops.

    wook,
    @wook@fosstodon.org avatar

    @darth @nirik .. let’s hope we get some official clarity on Fedora 40 Gnome , and if there will be a backup option to re-enable manually. Agreed it is good to push Wayland forward, I just hope enough basics work by then. There are certainly too many daily blockers still today.
