Dear Fedi Admins of relatively small instances:

If you notice a new account on your instance has a seemingly "real" name attached to their account, it might seem strange at first, but do yourself and Fedi a favor and google that name.

There's some here that are scammers trying to impersonate famous people from somewhat niche entertainment media. Just this morning there was an account registered on a small instance with the name of a professional wrestler.

Thankfully this person had the misfortune of grabbing my attention (wrestling fan) immediately in my timeline and I notified the admin of the potential scam and we were able to mitigate any real harm.

You may not be so fortunate as this in the future.

Some even go so far as to attempt to impersonate lesser known athletes from other professional sports and try to get gullible fans of the team or sport to give them money.

Be safe out there and do your due diligence. It just might save you, your users, or other Fedi users from getting scammed out of their hard earned money.

For those #New to #Mastodon and any other platforms across the #Fediverse. You can search for the #hashtags #Mastotips or #Feditips to get info about all kinds of little nuances of the Fediverse!

The most important ones:
Make an #introduction post littered with hashtags that are relevant to your interests. People with those interests are likely to follow or boost your introduction for more visibility.

Follow Follow Follow! Follow people that seem interesting to you. It's the basis of "federation" across the fediverse and helps your toot travel to other instances.

ActivityPub is so neat! With all the new implementations coming out, it's slowly becoming my "one stop shop" internet aggregator.

For example, all from within my Mastodon instance I can:

Follow communities on Lemmy and Kbin, allowing me to interact with every post/comment and make my own post or comment to any community.

Follow my favorite podcasts and get new episodes directly in my feed via PodcastIndex.org

Follow WordPress blogs that have the ActivityPub plugin activated.

SOON enough I'll be able to:

Interact/follow accounts on Threads (and hopefully someday Instagram)

Follow/interact with comments/posts/communities from NodeBB forums.

This protocol is changing the internet and how I use it every day.

PS. If you want more information on how to do any of these things, just let me know and I will explain. Though please limit to asking about one or two at a time, as some are quite intricate in their implementations.

A lot of people are VERY confused about the newish Fediverse WP integration. So here's some info.

1. It's still a plugin. This plugin is not enabled by default and has to be enabled manually and setup, although setup is fairly simple.

2. It's only a default plugin for officially hosted WP blogs through their website. If you host a WP blog on a bare metal machine, you will have to install the plugin before setting it up.

3. Currently, the only way to interact with the blog is if the owner posts the Fediverse username from their main Fediverse account so you can follow OR by going to a blog post on the blog manually, then copying and pasting the link into your Mastodon search field. From there you can boost/favorite/comment.

4. The plugin currently doesn't federate replies to comments from the original blog author within the WP ecosystem. Therefore if you own a blog and want to reply to a comment on the Fediverse. The best way to do that would be to find the comment on the Fediverse from your Mastodon account and reply that way.

@pfefferle please let me know if I got anything incorrect or if there's something you think that should be added. Great work, I love the plugin and am looking forward to what you have in store for us next!

New to Mastodon and confused about why you don't see anything on your home feed and nobody interacts with your posts?

1. Follow people. Fedi has no algorithm beyond the "explore" tab. It works completely by follow relationships. The more people you follow with similar interests, the more likely they'll follow you back. Not to mention your home feed will be filled by their toots.

2. Hashtags. Full indexed search is EXTREMELY new and some instances haven't upgraded yet. Even then, some users don't want EVERY toot of theirs to be discoverable so they turn that feature off. However, Hashtags are always searchable for public toots. Litter your posts with relevant hashtags so people can find your toots!

PSA: Since Threads apparently will be federating replies soon, I thought I should post this again, because there's still a lot of people that don't know.

When a normal user uses "block this domain" it's LITERALLY just a MUTE. The blocked server can still see, interact, and reply to your posts, you just won't be able to see them.

It's kinda like sitting in a room with hungry bears while wearing a blindfold. If you're scared of hungry bears, your best bet is to get out of the room, not put a blindfold on. And by this, I simply mean to migrate to an instance where the blocks are up to your standard on the "instance" level.

Stay informed and make informed decisions, no matter what you choose to do with your Fediverse presence.

So, apparently I'm on a #Fediblock list because "33% of trusted sources recommend a block". Except .art is DEFINITELY NOT a trusted source and is the only "trusted source" blocklist on which my instance appears.

Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?

I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.

My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷‍♂️

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬
