📣 My nature documentary "Antarctica Unearthed", which I shot entirely solo during my recent expedition to Antarctica, is exciting and a huge undertaking.
Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, Ca. Famous for its unique optical illusion that makes it appear to be on fire for a brief period of time each year in mid- to late February. This happens when the setting sun hits the waterfall at just the right angle, illuminating the mist and spray in a fiery orange glow. #nature#parks#science#light#photo#CC#photography
I found the most amazing tree last weekend, with gorgeous lichens all over one side.
The red-capped lichen is a new one for me - I think it's Haematomma babingtonii. The textures are amazing, and they all look awesome together, especially with the moss to set it all off
Pictures taken between 4-5 AM tonight from the Icelandic Coast Guard's helicopter.

Having heard the call of a kingfisher near a lake I was mooching around in Worcs some years ago, I went for a closer look.
The kingfisher was hunting the edge of the pool where I could see a large shoal of small fish, but there was nowhere suitable for perching to watch and dive from, so it was occasionally hovering over the water instead.
Wonderful to witness, and I captured quite a few images.

And here we are again. Continuing with my "Pristine Winter" collection. I just had gotten my new camera and lenses the days before and was totally eager to get out ... and that day it just had snowed. -- no colors any more. I was a bit ... well. I had to replan. go for black&white, structures, patterns, shapes only.
People often think of California as nothing but desert. Let me change your mind. If that is true, than this is what the desert looks like after a rainy winter. This is a California wildflower super bloom at sunrise. Poppies & wildflowers as far as I could see covering this hills. One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
Gullfoss is one of Iceland's most iconic natural landmarks. Two distinct drops, the first dropping 36 feet, the 2nd plunging 69 feet into the canyon below on the Hvítá River.
To your eye, Betelgeuse is the bright "shoulder" star in Orion. A new simulation shows what it would look like if you could get up close: an enormous, boiling cauldron of gas.
If Betelgeuse were placed where the Sun is, Earth's orbit (blue circle) would be deep inside. That's how big it is!
“#Humanrights and #nature’s rights are the enemies of profit. As long as profit and growth are the focus of all investment, there will never be, and there has never been, any “good” #capitalism.”
I love it when trees grow on rocks. It shows just how determined and resilient they can be, if we let them.
This oak is part of one of the few remaining areas of temperate rainforest in the UK - look at the tree ferns growing on it.
We need to protect and extend these precious remnants.
I've a fun, short piece out from the @TexasObserver magazine, about a crew of volunteers that have been going out every week, for about 15 years, to count all the crawling, flying critters they can find.
