The ground is not just shaking in #Iceland, it is moving. Two measuring devices which are about six kilometres apart show that they have moved about 1.2m (6 feet or so) further away from each other. There is magma pushing its way up to the surface.
The small town of #Grindavík (population 3700) has been evacuated because the #VolcanicEruption might start within the town itself or at least quite close to it.
Well, I thought it was when my son sent it to me from #Iceland today, and then I joked that it might be a new #volcano.
It is, actually, light from a new volcano in the #Reykjanes Peninsula, where all the other action has been.
The son is living (for grad school) on the north side of #Reykjavik (about 25 mi. north of #Grindavík and he said the light in the sky was visible from his apartment. He and his room mate went down to the beach to get a clearer picture.
The eruption of a new volcano near Grindavík, #Iceland has finally started.
Just to make this very clear: everyone, and most house pets, had been evacuated from Grindavík weeks ago. It is not clear how close to the actual town this is, but at least rest assured nobody is in danger.
We went to the Perlan hill in Reykjavík to have a better view. We were not the only people who had that idea — got kinda picnic-y in the middle of the night. Fun!
I brought my :bluetooth: speaker.
And put on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.
It had to be done.
(yes, photo quality is crap, Fairphone 4 camera is a potato when it comes to night photos; but that nicely avoids privacy issues around people in the photo!)
New eruption started this morning in Reykjanes, Iceland.

Mastodon is getting much better , following the hashtag #iceland gives me all the news about the latest volcanic eruption there, no reason to look on X

Gullfoss is one of Iceland's most iconic natural landmarks. Two distinct drops, the first dropping 36 feet, the 2nd plunging 69 feet into the canyon below on the Hvítá River.
Around 800 earthquakes since midnight in the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, south of the capital. There is a high likelihood of a volcanic eruption, near the town of Grindavík.
Grindavík (pop ~4,000) has been evacuated.
A magma dike extends from Stóra-Skógsfell in the north to Grindavík in the south and extends beneath the sea. The shallowest depth of the top of the magma intrusion north of Grindavík is 1.5 km.
if lava, which is alkaline, comes into contact with sea water, chlorine fumes can be produced"
A state of emergency has been declared in southern Iceland after the eruption of another volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the fourth since December. The head of department at the Norwegian Meteorological agency said there could be "dangerous" consequences if lava reaches the sea as it flows southwards

A quick refresher on the geology of Iceland:
Iceland lies on the divergent boundary between the Eurasian plate and the N. American plate. It also lies above a hotspot, the Iceland plume, which is believed to have caused the formation of Iceland itself, the island appeared over the ocean surface about 16 to 18 mya.
Dotted with volcanoes, geysers and underground magma chambers, #Iceland is no stranger to earthquakes and lava eruptions.
Workers who constructed protective berms around Grindavik have shared some amazing close-up footage of the lava flow from the new fissure as they attempt to save their heavy machinery.
