Very happy that the okonomiyaki stand is now a fixture at the Leiden market 😊

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@knud yeah, it's a small stand. Used to be on the bridge, but he now moved more to the side and has been there for the last half a year almost every market day I could make it!

The world is pretty shitty right now and I have a long weekend, so let me try to make the world a bit better: who wants a hand made aquarelle postcard and a book recommendation?

You don't get to choose the card (and I don't yet know what I feel like painting) but you can tell me what kind of book and in which language you want 😊

I'll be happy when I make the card and you when you received it so we get a net win in happiness together 💚

@venite 💚 your posts were an inspiration definitely!

@grb090423 Oooh, will try! (a bit hard because most of my non-fiction is in German, but I have something in mind.)

The new hummus place in the city is as good as everyone said it was. Also suuuper friendly - since I was there with a colleague with a rather unhappy kid...

Today in my Astro Sci-Comm class we tried something new: we watched clips of 4 astronomers, & discussed the wildly different speaking/presenting styles. Of course I chose these to be VERY different in style. Only 1 was a chaotic train wreck (spoiler, it was me from +10yrs ago)

@jradavenport @knud I actually did a (short) course during my PhD on public speaking that instead on the usual "this is how to make engaging slides" focussed on how to use your voice - and was especially geared for women, which I also found super useful.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@knud @jradavenport yes and no. The slide ones usually are rather about the structure and level of a talk and many folks find that hard to get. But still: get the voice one if you can! Not just for public talks, also for normal speaking an etc.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@jradavenport @knud honestly it's too long ago for details 😅 I went out mainly with a better understanding of the difference between my normal speaking voice and ny lecture voice (and how not to go too deep with the second to make sure I'm not creaking and can actually speak for hours) and with awareness how people's voice often changes between languages.

I love Ursula LeGuin to bits (in three languages) - the shelf is (part of the) proof. But I never got the excitement about "The Ones Who Walks Away from Omelas".

I know what the story, the metaphor tries to say. But all that I see is how this is a story about walking away. Not stay and change: be the change, start the change, convince the others that things need to be better. But a story about keeping one's conscience clean and walking away. And the injustice left behind continues.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@IcooIey yeah, I get that! Such stories are important! Done that often in my life and do think it's often crucial (and we often don't do it enough and end up fighting too many battles). But I feel like the story does not discuss that? If that were the focus, I'd rather expect it to focus on why walk away and what it means etc.

And in any way, cool to see how different folks interpret the story! Thank you for commenting!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@michael_w_busch I have never thought about the timeline of writing the two, but yes ...! And Iove Dispossessed a ton - at a point in my life I had four different editions, but only have two left now :)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasconnor I've read the one or other about over the years, but none of the above ones, thanks! N. K. Jemisin seems to have had thought similar to mine!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@Fragarach thank you for describing whay the story means to you!

I get this point, too. But my problem is then the walking away. That's where the metaphor breaks for me. Because just not participating, quietly, is not enough to change.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@CharleneTeglia I'm glad I talked about it here because I always felt like I'm alone. I clearly am not 😊

(Never got to read Narnia as a kid and as a grown up read enough about the author to nope out really hard... I do know what you mean though, I did read the summary at some point and... nope.)

When should one call themselves an X researcher?

There are so many different types of researchers. Weather researchers, climate researchers, brain researchers. And within those categories, the nuances (like memory researchers).

When someone says they are an X researcher, what does that imply to you? In other words, what qualifies? Does it just imply that they are curious about X? Or perhaps that they know a bit more about it - perhaps they've mastered some scholarly literature or they've done at least one experiment? Or maybe even published a paper in a peer reviewed journal? Or maybe even more - perhaps they have a body of work on the topic; maybe they even run a lab (and have grants to support X research).

On one hand, no one should gate keep curiosity! On the other, certain terms imply knowledge and qualifications. I'm a "researcher". But just because I know a lot about memory doesn't automatically mean that people should listen to me about climate or economics. And I once read a very good book about ecosystems, but I don't think that means I should quality as an ecosystem researcher. So what, then, might instead?

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@benjamingeer I am and this is fine! They are early career researchers. Been one of them until few years ago myself.
