This is a great video by @TechConnectify about flashbulb technology in #photography. I was born in '79 so I just barely remember the flashcubes and being fascinated by them. I remember staring at them to understand the difference between a fresh and a spent flash.

In addition to the usual wonderful stuff we have a #SlowMo section to really see what is going on when the bulbs fire off.

oligneisti,

I actually just found an Instamatic camera in a box of stuff from my grandparents. The model number is 155x. I do not have any flashcubes though.

There is a scene in #FightClub where the protagonists (so to speak) threaten to kill a clerk and then let him go. Their takeaway is that tomorrow will be the best day of that person's life.

This logic holds up as long as you don't know anything about how people work. In reality it is more likely that person will just be dealing with PTSD. I am not claiming the filmmakers didn't understand this but I am sure a lot of the movie's fans have no clue.

oligneisti, to linux

A few years ago I decided that instead of talking about the range of options available to regular users who wanted to try #Linux I would just tell them about #LinuxMint.

It is not that I am convinced Mint is the absolute best but rather that I discovered that the abundance of choice is disorienting and that if the person made the switch I would be more able to guide them through any problems if they were using the same #distro as me.

I bought a late last year. I went through all sorts of reviews. My favourite was likely just going through all the documentation supplied by .

The review which really convinced me was some person going through everything and concluding that you could get a phone with better specs for a lower price. The fact that they couldn't wrap their head around the appeal of and parts made to last made me buy one.

oligneisti, to Facebook

I just unfriended someone on #Facebook. No drama, just someone I knew a little a long time ago who kept posting uninteresting things. Facebook just keeps showing me this person's posts. I think the algorithm might be broken beyond repair.

It feels like a part of #Enshittification that algorithms that worked okay for some time have managed to evolve into something which makes no sense whatsoever.

oligneisti, to RSS

Instead of, or in addition to, saying "like and subscribe" #YouTubers should tell their viewers to check out their #rss feed which is updated every time they put out a new video. Maybe that rss feed is from a #WordPress site which has their embedded videos in each post and also uses WP's #ActivityPub plugin to integrate with the #Fediverse.

#Creators can liberate themselves from the algorithm but they need to be proactive. They need to build the world they want.

oligneisti, to Amazon

I do not meet eligibility requirements at #Amazon to write a review about a fake Icelandic book which explains how you cook with "brickwork-jars" (machine translation of "Mason jar") by a fake Icelandic author.

I assume I don't meet the requirements because sellers have complained about my reviews which pointed out that their products were fake and/or worthless. For instance I wrote reviews about badly-OCR'ed public domain ebooks.

So maybe reviews on Amazon er worthless now?

There is nothing new about a in the south-west of , on Reykjanes (smoky peninsula). This map (from the Icelandic outlet ) shows that there were centuries of repeated from about the 8th to the 13th centuries CE.

You can see how the southern part of the capital-region intersects with eruptions from the 10th century. I live in but it is beneath the box labelled Kópavogur.

I'll give some info on reading the map in a reply.

oligneisti, to internet

The #Internet has all these amazing ways to disseminate information that should be controlled by librarians but keep being taken over and rendered useless by marketing departments.

A #Librarian is trying to help you find what you are looking for. A marketing department wants you to find what they are selling.

I was reading an old article about a well known #Icelandic family. Which included an a amazing line that skates around the issue at hand.

The description of one member of the family included a line about how his wife had died young, leaving behind young children.

The article omits the fact that she was murdered by this man, her husband.

@oligneisti Could you perhaps answer a couple of questions for me? I'm not finding the information in articles I've read- how does Iceland's government respond to the citizens of Grindavik? Will they get financial assistance to rebuild or move elsewhere if the town is deemed unsafe?

oligneisti,

There have been temporary efforts, especially regarding mortgage payments.

The big long term questions are unanswered. People who lost their houses yesterday will get compensation, same goes for houses that were damaged by the quakes.

A woman I know from was actually hoping that the lava would take her house so she could move on with her life.

was dealing with a housing shortage before the so the situation is difficult.

⬇️

@Heidiknits

oligneisti,

⬆️
There are elements of the compensation laws that clearly favor those who return. When avalanches hit two villages in the Western-Fjords in Iceland back in the 90s, new houses were built within a safer area in the villages.

What I am hearing is that the uncertainty is the worst for many people. We don't know if will be habitable any time in the future. Geology shows that these can go on for decades in the same area.

Fascinating story here

Apple changed its podcasting rules — if someone doesn’t listen to a podcast for five episodes, Apple will turn off automatic downloads

Some big podcasts saw their download numbers drop by perhaps 40% — with potentially massive repercussions to come from their advertisers and sponsors

A wild and unsettling example of the bubbliness of the podcast market, and of apples outsize control

https://www.semafor.com/article/01/14/2024/the-incredible-shrinking-podcast-industry

oligneisti,

For someone like me who relies on Patreon/PayPal funding it would be a good thing not having people download episodes they do not listen to. It would also be nice to have more accurate numbers (though I can't promise I'll be happy if my numbers dip).

From what I've seen, the main problem with #PodcastAds how inexpensive they are. Not great for smaller #Podcasts. The big #PodcastNetworks seem to rely on selling as many ads per episode as possible.

Why haven't they setup #ActivityPub yet?

For that matter, have any of these #WordPress powered sites setup AP yet? #Fediverse

oligneisti,

The thing is that adding #ActivityPub to #WordPress is extremely simple. It isn't a new account on a social-network. It is adding value to what you already have. It is so much easier than making your site connect to #Facebook with the various plugins and tools.

Minus 13 Celsius tonight,

oligneisti,

That would be 113° on the original scale Celsius came up with. The boiling point of water was 0°. Linnaeus and others came with the idea if reversing it which feels like the greatest improvement imaginable. If course we might have gotten used to it like Americans who defend Fahrenheit (despite the fact it is just nonsense).

May I ask where in Sweden? My sister lives in Dalarna so I have visited quite a few times.

@selea

I've been to Rättvik and Göteborg (Icelandic: Gautaborg). But there are large swathes of the country between Göteborg and Stockholm which I have yet to explore and I haven't been farther north than Älvdal.

This cites and critiques a paper which finds that autistic people just care too much about doing whats good.

> Here, we show that ASD individuals are more inflexible when following a moral rule even though an immoral action can benefit themselves, and suffer an undue concern about their ill-gotten gains and the moral cost.
