I discovered when I graduated from Computer Science I prefer people to programming. I toot about Privacy and about how RFC1984 relates to that. I'm concerned by the threat of mass data collection and surveillance. I like to raise awareness of this RFC: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

Seeing some rather recognisable attitudes in arguments against NetBSDs stance against AI generated code.

How do you know, how would you stop it. You can't stop us.

Like aren't we meant to be better than that?

Disturbingly similar attitude to when we ask folks to not scrape folks posts on the fediverse without asking.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Plus there are some very real licence considerations which will affect copyright (and copyleft).

Well it illustrates a lot of antisocial behaviour. It shows it's about what they want to do at the expense of the wider community.

It's entitled. It's kinda predatory as well.

@grimalkina The python community has been awesome in this regard.

I do think some of this is because of @phpledge which has some conferences and speakers considering Public Health as an important factor in a healthy community.

Some of us are missing from your public spaces . No public health policy is a major reason why.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@grimalkina @phpledge I wish more conferences would consider this.

Including various @EC_NGI events that also don't have codes of conduct.

You can't build a diverse secure ecosystem of professionals if you don't want to put the effort into making it safe for that community to attend.

Who's voices are you ignoring? How unsafe down the line do you make it for yourself and your projects in the future.

It's nice US and Canada events are starting to do so. Be nicer if more European folks did.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@grimalkina But it is gatekeeping, and I do know it's affecting my career and my opportunities.

Plus calling it out also does it. So it's great you do ask for those considerations on your speakers page.

I don't think advocating for your health is a bad thing to ask for.

I wish others saw it that way. But the more of us who do so, despite the cost, the more we normalise this idea.

smach, to random
@smach@masto.machlis.com avatar

What happens when you mandate masks at a conference now that most people no longer wear them but medically vulnerable people are still at risk because ? In the case of , the conference sells out.

Why a masking policy? “Many of us and our fellow community members can’t attend without health and safety guidelines in place. We want PyCon US to be an event that everyone feels safe attending,” organizers explained.

Well done @pycon https://fosstodon.org/@pycon/112445571644276379

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@TimWardCam @smach @pycon Indeed, it's why it would be nice for UK and EU conference organisers to consider a public health policy.

Which realistically needs our more prominent FLOSS folks to consider seriously asking for public health policies and if there aren't any not attending and saying why.

But a more likely thing is the rest of us politely asking for these policies and if an event has a code of conduct as well.

Slim pickings.

Rewatching searson 4 of Halt and Catch Fire, which is about indexing the sites on the internet. The algorithm Vs curation.

How do you index at scale?

It's interesting we're back there again now, considering how we curate it as our web gets polluted.

There'll be an #NGI breakout session during OW2con'24 for NGI beneficiaries. It's a chance to meet up with fellow contributors to the open internet, share a presentation about your project and to explore new collaboration possibilities.

Throughout the conference there'll be an NGI Community corner for projects to provide demos & meet open source professionals

OW2con'24 is held 11-12, June in Paris-Châtillon. Registration is free but mandatory.

@dentangle @NGIZero I'm honestly disappointed that this isn't the first NGI EU event that doesn't have an explicit #codeofconduct while this may be a new thing for industries like banking, we have no excuse in Tech for that. There was an NGI event earlier this year and I checked. No code of conduct, let alone a health policy.

We need to do better otherwise you won't really have a diverse community attending.

Due to the amount of days I’ve accrued in my leave balance, I officially was able to put in my two weeks’ notice with the United States Air Force today.

This is a weird time for me. I’m figuring out what my future looks like, and planning on going back to school full-time. Part of me is really happy, another part of me is sad, worried, terrified, burnt out, and depressed.

I had some amazing experiences, and met some incredible people. We made memories together. Walking away from that puts me in a really weird spot. I have to take time to figure my shit out.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@deadsuperhero you are older now.

You will get so much more out of the experience. You've already lived life, so there will be less stress about the potential of screwing it up.

You also have the support of your wife.

Higher Education is a different experience when you are contemporary with the lecturers.

I remember the older students I knew did, they weren't afraid to ask for support and get the best learning experience they could.

Ok, Cory Doctorow is pissing me off now, lol.

"Break down the steps of training a model and it quickly becomes apparent why it's technically wrong to call this a copyright infringement. First, the act of making transient copies of works – even billions of works – is unequivocally fair use. Unless you think search engines and the Internet Archive shouldn't exist, then you should support scraping at scale."

We need some kind of term for arguing via false equivalence.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sellathechemist ah yes the same old question, why don't we have a British big tech firm?

Tech firm gets acquired by American Firm as founders look for an exit to clear debts from a lack of support, or a loan rather than a grant.

BBC: No one will ever know...

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sellathechemist somehow I don't see the UK Government creating a series of funds like @EC_NGI or like @NGIZero in particular.

They want massive unicorns, rather than consider small to medium funding grants for digital innovation in #FOSS projects etc.

Let alone investment in digital sovereignity via supporting and using these projects.

Hm, so because I am so eager to understand things I know have the task to explain of tomorrow.

From what I understand, I can think of multicast of like topics in MQTT:
One sender and whoever is interested can read from it. New hosts are subscribed to it when they go online.

By setting certain flags in their are messages for routers and neighbors. One for request and a matching respond (called solicitation and advertisement).

Now I would love to have a confirm my understanding.

Because the teacher's explanation: 🤷

There's a massive elephant in the room when it comes to #FossSustainability . How do you recruit folks to help with building?

Just why is your community pipeline limited? Could it per chance be your public behaviour as the BDFL?

I mean you realise your community is more than just the code right?

http://onepict.com/20240512-elephant.html

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@z428 It really does. I do appreciate the strain that maintainers are going through.

They do need the support. But they do need to be open to considering what extra support they may need.

Including listening to their folks who may hint that they are being a bit of an asshole.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@Life_is @theresnotime @brooke @Raymond

We have institutional memory though. How our peers act in other FOSS projects that we may be involved in can make that sort of behavior seem acceptable.

To me this is more, how do we foster community, rather than I want to dictate your conversation. I don't.

Its more I'd like a bit more empathy before the reply.

I mention the BDFL as that happened to be in the examples in the post I wrote. But we are all ambassadors for our communities.

@ImakeIcecream it really was.

It's a great series, there's definitely character inconsistencies series to series, but that's what happens when you're combining several stories of innovation together.

It was also eye opening after having encountered people like Joe.

Here's to the builders.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@deadsuperhero every single series of it also shows the push and pull of community vs business.

Even in the first series when Cameron left.

We see it even more so as the idea of how communities form online expands.

Which you know very well. It's why scale is a practical consideration, but we loose what makes our online communities great.
