I discovered when I graduated from Computer Science I prefer people to programming. I toot about Privacy and about how RFC1984 relates to that. I'm concerned by the threat of mass data collection and surveillance. I like to raise awareness of this RFC: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

One of the many frustrating things that happens now with my long covid brain is that sometimes when I read out a set of words, I make it a plural or a similar meaning word when reading it out.

So that definitely wouldn't be good in an emergency situation and the operator asked me to read out a w3w entry.

One of the things I don’t miss about Berlin is how inconsiderate the smokers are.
I bought masks before the pandemic so I wouldn’t have to use up all my rescue inhalers dealing with smoking everywhere.

If you don’t have a separate smoking area, your conference is not accessible.
There should be no smoking areas at the entrance.

Post-covid lung inflammation makes this important for more people than before.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@akareilly @dentangle were talking about smoking and how we grew with it all around us in our outside environments the other night.

Especially in comparison with folks not masking and people smoking even though we know the health harms.

Data wants to leak. Frankly the last thing any medical trust should do is share patient data with a commercial entity. But this was even more insidious with your browsing metadata through website trackers.

On the occasion I do a video, I tend to put links in the description as well.

To some extent that would be a cool thing for Peertube to be able to do when sharing with the rest of the Fediverse 🤔

Well of course they are going to use javascript on that conference site.

Only some of those entries have a coc to link to so there's buckleys chance of them having a health policy.

It's about the Web devs convenience not yours. 😒

You know as an adult woman the lyrics of poor unfortunate souls really should serve as a warning to women in general.

Particularly when Ursula is doing the hard sell about the payment.

"It won't cost much
Just your voice!"

Applies to so much of our lives and careers.

The lyricist was a genius.

I often think about how much monitoring goes into a crane as there's alot of moving parts and wear and tear.

We used to send Dell D500s offshore with the crane inspectors offshore. Those were surprisingly durable and we got them made with serial ports as crane systems used those. I doubt much has changed in 20 years.

But in a sense this is absolutely an IoT usecase. Imagine that information going back to the beach before the Inspectors go out.

onepict,

When I was first discussing multicast with my Da, the Oil Industry was a usecase that came to his head as well.

Sadly getting to operate a crane one time and swing a container around one time isn't something you can post on LinkedIn.

Because for one thing it's way too cool for LinkedIn. I mean how often does a mandatory thing get to be actual fun, with hydraulics?

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@drwho yep like companies paid my ex employer to train them on that crane and access them for a qualification and I got a shottie for free!

I dare say not every employee thought it was fun, but more than you think did.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@vfrmedia
I suspect so. But I don't think many people get hired through LinkedIn.

I mean it's more useful than the CV library websites that it ate the lunch off, but not by much.

@vfrmedia @drwho yeah, there's some definate peacocking.

I tend to post there only because I know some of the NGI Marketeers are there.

At #IKEA we do something called "Front Days" where the office workers get a chance to work in the store. It's a really good idea, as sometimes we get a bit disconnected from the store and the business of selling furniture.

Finished my first day, and I'm working Friday/Saturday too - it's been quite a while since I worked in retail and I forgot how busy you are on your feet!

Good exercise, insights and a chance to practice my Dutch too!

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@tanepiper we used to have a similar thing at a crane management company I used to work for.

We had to go on a crane appreciation course. We also got to operate a pedestal crane up at Tyrebagger. We had to pick up a container and do a steady 360 degree turn without it swaying.

https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/52818

The linked photo is of a large crane in the middle of lots of bushes and railway weeds. The crane is painted green with a fairly short boom. Another crane boom is in the background.

In many countries we having problems with our police. Murder, rape, sharing images of crime scenes, institutional racism, misogyny or most recent example, police tasering a 95 year old woman. All of this before we speak of political role of the police.
Is too much power entrusted to the police? Why are so many recruits so lacking in common human decency and in intelligence? Should we restrict the statute book to make things simpler for the police? Without respect how can policing work?
#Police

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@IndyRichard I think with recruitment the very power that the Police have is a powerful inducement to a certain type of individual.

    I remember there was a short story that Anne Mccaffrey wrote about a computing course in the future where there was a rudimentary empathic explanation about duty of care of people's tape recordings. Including when they were deleted

    The main character had a rant as the rest of her classmates were taking the piss out of audio tape recordings that were stored and queued up on demand.

    Her point was that the data was important to the people storing the recordings because of the human connection.

    I kinda think if I'd ever been a Lecturer and there was a course on professional issues (covers legal but strangely not ethics), I'd assign that short story as an assignment.

    Because I'm pretty sure alot of CompSci could use a primer.

    Almost 300,000 “backdoor” searches of 702 data on Americans, including campaign donors and BLM protesters. Wow. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/05/19/fbi-digital-surveillance-misuse-jan6-blm/

    @JosephMenn So it's agents either don't understand the legalities for accessing digital surveillance tools or are trying it on. Which is it?

    Either way, it doesn't give me hope for European Forces being responsible either. I certainly wouldn't trust them with private messages scanned and data collection using #chatcontrol.

    I do hope that in this early stage any organiser looks to the recent example of @bsdcan who ran an inclusive and safe conference with a robust #PublicHealth policy. Other examples include #fossy and @northbaypython.

    I also hope that any potential Organisers get in touch with @phpledge and @josh to pick a suitable venue so that a conference can be safe for everyone to attend.
