I discovered when I graduated from Computer Science I prefer people to programming. I toot about Privacy and about how RFC1984 relates to that. I'm concerned by the threat of mass data collection and surveillance. I like to raise awareness of this RFC: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

In this 5th year of the Pandemic, I'm kinda gut punched by the abandonment of friends, some family and my peers.

I get punched again each time I see an event CFP shared with no health policy.

I recommend reading this piece by @MediaActivist . It's a very long, comprehensive read.

You aren't alone. This isn't your fault. Our society as it is set this up. It's just more of us are on the sharp edges of it. We're the canaries in the coalmine.

Sometimes I feel the arguments against UBI are a little like the arguments against the babybox (Finland and Scotland).

As "but you need others social support , otherwise it's just the money, the rest of capitalism stays in".

The baby box in Scotland did come with some social support as in Health Visitors during pregnancy and also after. It wasn't just bulk buying baby stuff.

But people got all riled up about well off folks getting a baby box. They realised it was an idea I'd an equal start.

You know the thing I love about the Auxiliary Languages of the 20th Century is the way that so many of the creators split off from Esperanto.

And we think forks are an issue with projects 😂

You may not have the spoons to attend an event.

You may not realise there's something you can do right now to help your community be more accessible to others.

You may want to spread word of a cool event to your followers. Which is awesome.

I'm always going to check out what you're interested in, mutuals.

Although I'd like a small favour if you can. Please can you check if they have a public health policy?

If they don't could you ask them? Please?

Because I want to boost.

In this world of pandemics, questionable governments and questionable choices in computing when we need to embrace degrowth, I find comfort at the moment in helping other folk when I can.

A bit like the metaphor of a butterfly causing a small flap that turns into a hurricane.

You never know quite how far small deeds can go. Help others when you can, it can be just a message of support. Or helping folks on to here.

It's all I can do. Rebel with small acts of kindness.

One of the reasons why I support @phpledge is that I believe that a public health policy is a way of showing you care about the human right of Freedom of Association.

Much like with codes of conduct if you won't make a space safer for some folks in a community you are excluding them. They also can't safely exercise their freedom of speech. As it's not physically safe for them to attend.

You also need to be prepared to enforce those policies.

If you can't do that, don't run one.

We need to enshrine #HumanRights for everyone, otherwise they do not protect anyone.

One of the reasons for censorship in a country can be because other people's human rights are being violated.

People should read the transcript of @how recent presentation at #EmpoderaLIVE.

It's about Human Rights, censorship and the gaslighting on the political stage that can happen during conflicts.

You can't hold rogue regimes to account if you allow censorship.

Kinda heartbroken.

Something I posted in 2023 @josh .

Yet again, I get the impression that FOSS doesn't really believe in equality. Especially if it's difficult to implement, or to get people to understand the issue.

Yet again, people express resentment that some of us are asking openly for some consideration of our health and safety.

Or perhaps Organisers don't like people asking them to enable that equality of access.

I recently had the chance to recommend blender to a client.

The only reason I could was because the client was looking for alternatives to help with an industry standard piece of software.

It also helped that blender has documentation and community resources.

There's always the factors of time, trust and support. Can you support the new folks, can you point them honestly at the community resources a piece of software has?

It's not enough to have the code.

Reading this, really just makes me think some technologists want Stepfords AI.

With Open AI, Altman and stealing Scarlett Johanssons voice, I kinda get the sense it's more of the same.

We're objects to some men, reduced to how we can service their needs.

The stepford wives, the Axlotl tanks of the Bene Tleilax in Dune.

Just eugh.

Wow, now I'm imagining Halt and Catchfire, except it's set in Victorian times with Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace.

Although I'd be happy with an adaptation of this:

Seeing some rather recognisable attitudes in arguments against NetBSDs stance against AI generated code.

How do you know, how would you stop it. You can't stop us.

Like aren't we meant to be better than that?

Disturbingly similar attitude to when we ask folks to not scrape folks posts on the fediverse without asking.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Plus there are some very real licence considerations which will affect copyright (and copyleft).

Rewatching searson 4 of Halt and Catch Fire, which is about indexing the sites on the internet. The algorithm Vs curation.

How do you index at scale?

It's interesting we're back there again now, considering how we curate it as our web gets polluted.

There's a massive elephant in the room when it comes to . How do you recruit folks to help with building?

Just why is your community pipeline limited? Could it per chance be your public behaviour as the BDFL?

I mean you realise your community is more than just the code right?

Looking at archived #multicast projects from the 1990s. I feel a little sad.

All these projects with different distributed use cases for multicast.

It's not just for streaming.

https://web.archive.org/web/20150924034926/http://www.infres.enst.fr/~dax/guides/multicast/mdownload.html

I wish some of the folks who worked on these projects were on the fediverse.

#librecast wants to bring back multicast. We want to do more with it.

At it's heart multicast is networking with consent. From the very fact it is pub/sub

I've never encountered a bear.

I have found herds of cows to be very disquieting. You do not want to be in a field with them when they are calving.

Although really they are scary all the time.

You hear a large rumbling. Then the herd appear and then they stop. Just watching you.

So that's me received the confirmation that my stuff is removed from Bigstack.

Which is good. It shows the Optout requests are being done.

Go to check again for librecasts old github account. Looks like I missed some.

While I did think it is important for Software Heritage to archive code, I wish it was done Opt-in.

It would be nice to be asked and for that code to be curated. This is not curation. This is automation.

"I'm more concerned with the prevailing attitude in tech that it can do what it likes with our data and it doesn't feel it has to ask us. If anything the default is that you have to opt out of their processing of your data. Which is predatory behaviour as people need to know that they can opt out and the procedure for it needs to be simple, clear and concise. "

By the time you get to an election, its too late to do anything other than vote.

You need to start way earlier. You need to organise and get your funding and candidates together for any elections to increase experience in politics.

The base builds brick by brick.
