So if you are curious about how to package for #NixOs perhaps there is also a project you'd love to contribute to and have in Nix. This is your chance to learn and work with other folks.
Apply for Summer of Nix 2024 to join one of four teams in making selected free and open source software (FOSS) projects work reliably on a whim using Nix and NixOS.
Deadline May 10.
Summer of Nix is a rare opportunity for students or early-career professionals with diverse technical skills and interests to practice disciplined software development with Nix while contributing to the public good and receiving some payment for it.
As one of the projects that benefited from the #SummerOfNix last year, we can say that packaging a #FOSS project for a distribution you love is an immense public good. It helps the distribution of projects and helps to strengthen that distribution as well.
🚂 On my way to the #NIXOS Zero Hydra Failures meet-up in #Zürich. I will share some of my experience from the last years on how money flows into the upstream ecosystem from different types of actors with different interests. I hope we can get some thoughts and ideas how this money can be used and investments encouraged without throwing the community off balance.
Now participants are presenting #SummerofNix experience from this year. This year was #mobprogramming exclusive, a super interesting experiment. Seems it was transformative for those who participated. I'd love to share more about it.
Very nice that collaborative and sustainable projects like this can exist besides the usual programmer grinding mills. Thanks again to @EC_NGI.
Quite pleased with myself, installed #debian on an old machine. I'm familiar with apt, installing opensshserver, wireshark, traceroute and bridge utils were a doddle. Plus because it was #trixie I installed lcsync for testing. #librecast
Installed #NixOS on another. Now I need to figure out the phraseology for installing on Nix.
But the stable desktop image for NixOS would work if you wanted to install it on a machine for a relative.
#SummerOfNix are packaging @librecast and we have packages for the librecast, lcrq and lcsync with more to follow!
If there is anyone in the community who is interested in learning more about #NixOS and packaging, the SummerOfNix folks will show you how to become a #Nix maintainer. It's a small task - updating packages a few times a year, but an important one. It's a way to get involved in the #FOSS community and help support #librecast and NixOS.
As a small project we are always excited when we end up in a new distribution or even a new system!
We know we have a supportive community on here. So if you want to contribute and you aren't sure how to, you can always ask us on IRC or message us here.
With the excellent news that we were packaged for @nixos_org we want to ensure that it's maintained.
If you aren't sure about the process of Nix Packaging and maintenance, #SummerofNix are happy to explain the process as are others like @Pol who are involved in NixOS packaging.
The SummerOfNix mob are currently working to put some librecast libraries to NixOS Master.
I'm really happy to announce the #SummerofNix 2023, organized together with the #NixOS and #NLNet foundations.
We have significantly reworked the collaboration format and will focus exclusively on #mobprogramming this year. In addition, we will be working on a monorepo “ngipkgs” for all #NGI Nix packages.
Thank you, @EU_Commission and NGI program, for the support and the belief in Nix as a tool to manage the complexity of #opensource.
