The thing is that #RSS is the best. Social media sites don't like RSS because it breeds independence. Which is exactly why #creators should be using and promoting RSS. You can whine about the #algorithm or you can work on freeing your self from its clutches.

The ground is not just shaking in #Iceland, it is moving. Two measuring devices which are about six kilometres apart show that they have moved about 1.2m (6 feet or so) further away from each other. There is magma pushing its way up to the surface.

The small town of #Grindavík (population 3700) has been evacuated because the #VolcanicEruption might start within the town itself or at least quite close to it.

The White House website (whitehouse.gov) runs on WordPress. The site presents the content on the latest bills, legislation, statements, and more.

Why haven't they setup #ActivityPub yet?

For that matter, have any of these #WordPress powered sites setup AP yet? #Fediverse

Many Icelanders love tracing their family trees. I do. So when I went down ten generations and found a master of sorcery (galdrameistari) who is featured in a couple of #Icelandic #folktales it was inevitable that I would dedicate an episode of #StoriesOfIceland to this man while also covering his son and grandson (9th and 8th generation ancestors respectively).

I think there are many people who imagine that flowing lava is the most dangerous part of a #VolcanicEruption but since gas is invisible it is often the thing which kills people. About an hour the few people who were in #Grindavík (mostly those tryibg to save valuables or minimize potential damage) had to leave because gas detectors measured high levels if sulfur dioxide in the air. The eruption is pending but we have seen how powerful science and technology are at preventing harm.

When I first started blogging in 2002 no one noticed. I emailed my friends and sent them messages. I had no expectation that people would start reading right away. I just wrote and posted, wrote and posted, and slowly gained attention.

Today when people, especially those who have gotten used to having an audience, try out the #Fediverse they often seem to think that their presence in itself should make them popular. They don't do any work and give up when success isn't automatic.

I am slowly realising that #PeerTube is so much cooler than I thought. Actually amazing. For those who make videos and rely on donors and/or selling their own ads it seems almost perfect.

Like so much in this corner the world, #Fediverse, #Linux, etc., the real problem is just convincing people to use all this great stuff.

#GBoard has become a hindrance to writing stuff on my #Android phone. It has become very aggressive doing autocorrect. It's worse in Icelandic than English. It repeatedly corrects the same words. It doesn't learn.

It used to be better. I am sure it used to use my spelling history as a guide.

I'd like some software to go through what I've written in the past (blogs etc) and compile a list of words not found in the #spelling dictionary. I could then edit the list to create a custom dictionary.

I just unfriended someone on #Facebook. No drama, just someone I knew a little a long time ago who kept posting uninteresting things. Facebook just keeps showing me this person's posts. I think the algorithm might be broken beyond repair.

It feels like a part of #Enshittification that algorithms that worked okay for some time have managed to evolve into something which makes no sense whatsoever.

The situation now is a waiting game. The magma is reported as being around 800 meters below the surface which is really alarming.

Everything points to this being much worse than the tourist friendly eruptions we've seen in the last few years.

I was looking for a file for updating the firmware on my #Canon camera. The website detected my operating system and told me there was nothing available for #Linux.

I managed to work around this and downloaded the "Windows" version of the firmware.

I imagined it might be a software to update the firmware and I would need to use Wine or VirtualBox.

It was in fact a zip file containing files I simply needed to copy on to my SD-card. Quite neutral in terms of OS.

I was reading an old article about a well known #Icelandic family. Which included an a amazing line that skates around the issue at hand.

The description of one member of the family included a line about how his wife had died young, leaving behind young children.

The article omits the fact that she was murdered by this man, her husband.

There is nothing new about a #VolcanicEruption in the south-west of #Iceland, on Reykjanes (smoky peninsula). This map (from the Icelandic outlet #Heimildin) shows that there were centuries of repeated #eruptions from about the 8th to the 13th centuries CE.

You can see how the southern part of the capital-region intersects with eruptions from the 10th century. I live in #Reykjavík but it is beneath the box labelled Kópavogur.

I'll give some info on reading the map in a reply.

Instead of, or in addition to, saying "like and subscribe" #YouTubers should tell their viewers to check out their #rss feed which is updated every time they put out a new video. Maybe that rss feed is from a #WordPress site which has their embedded videos in each post and also uses WP's #ActivityPub plugin to integrate with the #Fediverse.

#Creators can liberate themselves from the algorithm but they need to be proactive. They need to build the world they want.

I bought a #Fairphone5 late last year. I went through all sorts of reviews. My favourite was likely #LouisRossmann just going through all the documentation supplied by #Fairphone.

The review which really convinced me was some person going through everything and concluding that you could get a phone with better specs for a lower price. The fact that they couldn't wrap their head around the appeal of #repairability and parts made to last made me buy one.

A few years ago I decided that instead of talking about the range of options available to regular users who wanted to try #Linux I would just tell them about #LinuxMint.

It is not that I am convinced Mint is the absolute best but rather that I discovered that the abundance of choice is disorienting and that if the person made the switch I would be more able to guide them through any problems if they were using the same #distro as me.
