PSA only just bc I absolutely thought this was common knowledge, but apparently it’s not. If you want more breaking news on threads and aren’t getting enough, navigate to all your favorite news accounts and click the little bell at the top of their profile. Once you do that you’ll get a new notification every time they post anything. This is why I’m not ever complaining about the quality of news on threads. It comes straight to me.

Why is it that there is no version / distribution of #Linux that does exactly what #Windows does? Well, without the bad aspects like spying on you.

I wonder if Microsoft is somehow suppressing this possibility… otherwise everyone would be using Linux 🤷

I personally think its the ecosystem of apps and a clever trap set up early. Many people grow up with using MS products like Windows, Office and nowadays Teams in schools. When they are adults, they are familiar with these products and may also have to use them at work as well. That's until they grow old and don't want to learn anything too fancy anymore thereby sticking their known routine of using MS products. Similar story with Google and Apple software and services

    I've been using Tokodon on Linux Mint for a while now.
    After its last update, it seems to be having issues.

    Unfortunately Tokodon always seems to have some issues. At the moment I would recommend sticking to the web interface of Mastodon

    I'm surprised at how few retail websites have implemented Apple Pay for checkout. It's a pleasure to use a site that implements this and when they do I'm happy to buy directly from them instead of through Amazon. Sites that make you manually enter all your shipping and credit card information while navigating thru last minute check out popups is a big reason why it's so much more convenient to buy the same thing thru amazon.

    There are a lot of things we can do to improve the web and make it more resilient to big tech. Optimizing web sites for rapid checkout with modern Apple and Google pay mechanics is one of them.

    Edit: Some of you correctly point out that this is actually just trading reliance on one big tech entity for another. I agree and would love to see a better approach for convenient online payments but that future seems very far off. Ironically, Apple and Google Pay can help smaller merchants level the playing field with Amazon today while we await a better payment future.

    What a shame that this headline even has to exist. used to be modular, robust and yes, back in the early 2000s.

    Along comes starting excessive use of glue and soldering. Of course their cult followers and friends in tech journalism follow along without any hesitation and we have a new trend of monoblock bricks. Everyone MUST follow along in order to be COOL and sell new devices.

    15 years later, a Thinkpad that can be repaired is newsworthy.

    upgraded my #linuxMint distro last week and am now discovering what it broke... i'll still take this over a mac, i spent two days setting up a work macbook for dev and i still can't get finder to consistently show me my own user home folder. x.x
