#Librarian, #podcaster (#StoriesOfIceland), #folklorist and more. #Icelandic but writing in English.

I run my own instance of Mastodon for Iceland and Icelandic stuff.

The thing is that #RSS is the best. Social media sites don't like RSS because it breeds independence. Which is exactly why #creators should be using and promoting RSS. You can whine about the #algorithm or you can work on freeing your self from its clutches.

#Icelandic has a few letters not found in English. My name is Óli Gneisti but it is usually rendered Oli in English. We also have the letter "ð" which tends to written as "d".

But #BBCNews has decided to go a different route, one that I don't remember seeing used during this century.

Aðalheiður = Aoalheiour

Sandgerði = Sandgeroi

Can you tell me which #RSS app you use and what the appeal of it is. You can also just tell me features the currently available apps lack.

The ground is not just shaking in , it is moving. Two measuring devices which are about six kilometres apart show that they have moved about 1.2m (6 feet or so) further away from each other. There is magma pushing its way up to the surface.

The small town of (population 3700) has been evacuated because the might start within the town itself or at least quite close to it.

Here is a thing I would like for my and general experience.

In my feed and notifications I would like something to differentiate between people I follow and people I don't. Some checkmark or just a line under people's name. Something similar could be done to indicate if someone follows you. Is this perhaps done in a subtle way I just don't notice?

I am bad at remembering if I follow people or not. I also don't check my followers regularly.

The hidden folk at #Yuletide. I retell two related #folktales and speculate about what they say about contemporary society.

I recorded the episode and mentioned the then current state of the pending #VolcanicEruption in #Iceland. While I was doing so, an eruption started. I added a note on this before I uploaded it to Patreon. Now that I am releasing it for everyone, the eruption seems to be over.

This is a great video by @TechConnectify about flashbulb technology in #photography. I was born in '79 so I just barely remember the flashcubes and being fascinated by them. I remember staring at them to understand the difference between a fresh and a spent flash.

In addition to the usual wonderful stuff we have a #SlowMo section to really see what is going on when the bulbs fire off.

#Facebook has actually been getting worse.

A week ago I posted a photo of the red glow from the then current #VolcanicEruption in #Grindavík #Iceland over there.

Last night Facebook's algorithm decided that what my friend needed to see was that week-old photo. My friend from Grindavík.

Though the eruption that started a week ago has died down, there is still activity below the surface. So my friend had quite a shock while scrolling down Facebook.

Just watched #TheWizardOfOz for the first time. I had absorbed most (all?) of it through cultural osmosis so there were few surprises, except perhaps for how well it holds up. Of course, it does feel slow and only one song is #OverTheRainbow.

I am using Facebook a bit these days, because I have to, and it shows me a few old posts from my friends and a lot of mean-spirited picture-jokes that is churned out by pages I have not interest in or were maybe interesting at the time I last used #Facebook.

Many Icelanders tend to think that is the only which has its own version of . They also think of these names as translations. They usually aren't.

For instance is Kænugarður. The name comes from the Viking Age when some Norse (often Swedes) went east while the more famous ones went west.

Another example is the . The Icelandic Árósar retains the original meaning of "the river mouth" while the modern Danish name is a bit like "river house".

People who rail against #EBooks are just jealous because paper-books don't have dark-mood.

oligneisti, to Etymology

Icelandic "skyrta" is almost the exact word as the English "shirt". Ignore the y/i and the simple rule of thumb is that "shi-" if English is "ski-" in Icelandic. You can use this information to understand the Icelandic word "skip".

In Icelandic we call excrement "skít(ur)". It is not considered a dirty word (except that it means dirty - a dirty dish is "skítugur diskur").

BTW. Through Norse influence the word "skyrta" was absorbed into English as "skirt".

Watching a video on a new version of a 3dprinter some guy made. Real cool. Then he goes on an explains how you can use it to make a gun...

oligneisti, to twitter

I just remembered something and understood what it actually meant. About a year ago, some ex-#Twitter staffer condescendingly explained to #Mastodon in general that people don't like accessing stuff in chronological order.

I think this person was confusing "spending more time using #SocialMedia" with liking what they were doing.

I like Mastodon more than Twitter but I spend less time using it.

Icelanders' belief in #elves is often greatly exaggerated. There is also a basic misunderstanding of what it entails for those who actually believe. Historically, people who thought that elves were real didn't think they were cute or in touch with nature. They could have signed on to what #TerryPratchett wrote. They thought elves were dangerous.

The #Internet has all these amazing ways to disseminate information that should be controlled by librarians but keep being taken over and rendered useless by marketing departments.

A #Librarian is trying to help you find what you are looking for. A marketing department wants you to find what they are selling.

I do not meet eligibility requirements at #Amazon to write a review about a fake Icelandic book which explains how you cook with "brickwork-jars" (machine translation of "Mason jar") by a fake Icelandic author.

I assume I don't meet the requirements because sellers have complained about my reviews which pointed out that their products were fake and/or worthless. For instance I wrote reviews about badly-OCR'ed public domain ebooks.

So maybe reviews on Amazon er worthless now?

There is a scene in #FightClub where the protagonists (so to speak) threaten to kill a clerk and then let him go. Their takeaway is that tomorrow will be the best day of that person's life.

This logic holds up as long as you don't know anything about how people work. In reality it is more likely that person will just be dealing with PTSD. I am not claiming the filmmakers didn't understand this but I am sure a lot of the movie's fans have no clue.

About a month ago I wrote something on the talk page for the #Wikipedia article on "Hero's journey". A few days ago it was removed by "ClueBot III".
