@oligneisti Could you perhaps answer a couple of questions for me? I'm not finding the information in articles I've read- how does Iceland's government respond to the citizens of Grindavik? Will they get financial assistance to rebuild or move elsewhere if the town is deemed unsafe?

oligneisti,

There have been temporary efforts, especially regarding mortgage payments.

The big long term questions are unanswered. People who lost their houses yesterday will get compensation, same goes for houses that were damaged by the quakes.

A woman I know from #Grindavík was actually hoping that the lava would take her house so she could move on with her life.

#Iceland was dealing with a housing shortage before the #VolcanicEruption so the situation is difficult.

oligneisti,

There are elements of the compensation laws that clearly favor those who return. When avalanches hit two villages in the Western-Fjords in Iceland back in the 90s, new houses were built within a safer area in the villages.

What I am hearing is that the uncertainty is the worst for many people. We don't know if #Grindavík will be habitable any time in the future. Geology shows that these #eruptions can go on for decades in the same area.
