We went to the Perlan hill in Reykjavík to have a better view. We were not the only people who had that idea — got kinda picnic-y in the middle of the night. Fun!

I brought my :bluetooth: speaker.

And put on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.

It had to be done.

(yes, photo quality is crap, Fairphone 4 camera is a potato when it comes to night photos; but that nicely avoids privacy issues around people in the photo!)

That eruption was in some ways similar, and in some ways different. Similar, because it's roughly the same location, and roughly the same kind of eruption.

Different, because this time the fissure is 5km long, and the lava flow is 10× greater than during the previous eruptions in the area.

@wcbdata yeah, it's about 45km by road from here. So a wheeled transport is preferable.

@ThunderHoneySnow @phire there is in general a volcano smell, eruptions emit a lot of different (toxic!) gasses. So far no specific smell noticed from that far away, though.

@adminkirsty oh, that's not great. Still, the eruption site is some way away from Grindavík, and the rescue services are in the area.

@MariaLiv yes, thank you for asking! We are very safe, in Reykjavík. The only question is if we're going to fly on Wednesday for our Christmas trip. So, a very first-world problem I am very okay with having, all things considered.
