For the soundscape I used a modified recording from Earthtunes. The audio is made from actual seismic data, recorded in Grindavik last year on the 10th of November (when the town was evacuated). Here's a video so you can hear and see the installation in action:

video of the installation. people walking around, touching the fabric, LEDs light up under their fingers

There are a lot of stories that could be told about Galina Balashova, the first and only architect of the Soviet space program:
how she designed the interiors of Soviet spacecrafts on weekends after working her main job;
how her architectural decisions influenced the design of the ISS;
how she was stripped of her rights and monetary rewards for the Soyuz-Appolo emblem that she designed…

But for me, the most stunning fact about her work is the one seemingly most insignificant:

To make the habitation sections of Soyuz spacecrafts extra homely, she attached her watercolor paintings to the walls.

The landscapes of forests, rivers and gardens burned to ashes with every habitation module as it deorbited, turning into unintentional performative art. These little pieces of the artist’s soul were so warm and so humane, burning brightly in stark contrast with cold war politics that were as freezing as outer space, where those pictures were admired for the last time.

people, catfolk and furries at #37c3 were naturally (and very understandably) nervous when they saw me pointing a chonky camera in their general direction.

Unfortunately, I couldn't explain and reassure everyone that I'm aware of all privacy concerns and, at events like these, I do not take pictures with humans in them, unless somebody asks me personally.

But, here are some more photos from the conference. 4 days were definitely not enough to explore and absorb all. of. this.

closeup of a magnifying glass in the hardware hacking area
very dark room, spots of lights here and there. in the center of the photo is a cardboard cutout of a cartoon mouse
"infinite mirror", an optical effect that one can create with a strip of LED and some glass. and there's also a cute cat lamp on top of it!

The eruption of a new volcano near Grindavík, #Iceland has finally started.

Just to make this very clear: everyone, and most house pets, had been evacuated from Grindavík weeks ago. It is not clear how close to the actual town this is, but at least rest assured nobody is in danger.

This year I finished one of the most fascinating projects I ever worked on.

Together with a team of researchers from the molecular neurodegeneration department at Amsterdam UMC we came up with a visual and interactive way to present their latest paper on tau protein aggregation and its effect on astrocytes.

I'm in Spain and oh my god Russian Salad is repulsive. Cold mashed potato and carrot topped with mayonnaise and a cold fish or a prawn. That's not dinner. That's a punishment. Two days in a row that's been dinner. Two days. Two. Days.

@ronanmcd sounds awful! never heard of a russian salad with fish and especially with prawns, might be some weird Spanish version of it. At the very least, I hope you're enjoying some sun and warmth out there

I cannot get good results out of #StableDiffusion.

“A fox crossing a residential street. The fox has a human face. There are autumn leaves on the ground, terraced houses in the the background, and a slight mist.”

It's just ignoring most of my prompt (as well as really struggling with what foxes look like). I've tried many iterations and variations, they're all like this.

A street in a autumnal park. There isn’t even a fox in this one, and no houses.
A three legged fox with no torso standing on a road in an autumnal park. It hasn’t got a human face and there are no houses in the background.
Some sort of shrunken fox-adjacent thing on a road in an autumnal park. No human face, no houses in the background.

How does this street light manage to be simultaneously from 1860 and 1960?
