It's that time again...I gotta get to work on my Maker Faire and SF Zine Festival applications, and cross my fingers that they accept me.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

Do you know of any Art Festivals or Conferences that I should apply to?

I'm more interested in public facing events, so that I can expose more people to #SciArt and #Science in general.

But I'm open to more specialized conferences, if there's an actual interest there in my work.

It can be difficult to come up with a single infographic that summarizes a complex topic without hiding more detailed information. I think this example from The Guardian is excellent. The estimation of the coming climate crisis in a nutshell. “Planet is headed for at least 2.5C of heating with disastrous results for humanity, poll of hundreds of scientists finds”

I know some fediverse apps use various text/image detection technologies, so I was curious if this encourages the use of alt text.

The main thing I learned: Out of nearly 30,000 fediverse posts I looked at, almost 80% did not have information about the client app.

That was a bit surprising. And it makes doing this sort of analysis difficult.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

You can still see some trends, for example, people who use Ivory for iOS posted 49% of their images with alt text, compared to Mastodon's 17.8% for Android and 20% for iOS users.

But I am not sure if there is enough data to draw solid conclusions.

I honestly enjoy writing good, descriptive alt text. Once you get used to it, it's no longer a chore, rather a fun exercise.

It gives you an opportunity to focus on the image you're sharing, sometimes revealing details you might miss.

It's a great writing challenge as well.

And it's just the right thing to do to help folks who rely on it.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

Speaking of challenging, data visualizations are definitely up there.

It's interesting to look at how different people approach these types of charts, for example.

Color can be a great way to distinguish data points in charts. But don't rely on color alone to convey information, as that can make things difficult for colorblind users. Using different shapes or patterns can help. Make sure patterns or textures are simple and not distracting.

Mehrad,

@A11yAwareness
In some cases like heatmaps which using patterns and shapes are not possible, we can use colorblind-compatible color palettes to make them more accessible:

14 out of 28 constituencies in Karnataka will vote in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on Friday. Past records show that the BJP has had an edge in LS elections over Assembly elections in the last 3 election cycles in the state. For Congress, the trend has been the opposite. Which way could Karnataka vote in 2024? Here are 3 charts which answer this question.
