The eruption of a new volcano near Grindavík, has finally started.

Just to make this very clear: everyone, and most house pets, had been evacuated from Grindavík weeks ago. It is not clear how close to the actual town this is, but at least rest assured nobody is in danger.

#Iceland is going through a heatwave.

I find these images to be a fantastic illustration of how visual communication can drastically vary depending on your point of origin/point of reference even when you deal with the same data.

This summer temperature in Reykjavik was above 13-15°C most of the time, and last few days it was around scorching 20°C! Unheard of.

My advice to all Icelanders is to stay hydrated, and to all folks dealing with #graphicdesign -- be aware of your personal biases

Map of Iceland but from windy.com. Windy.com uses gradient from -20C (blue) to +40 (red-brownish). The entire Iceland is in cold greenish hues

For the soundscape I used a modified recording from Earthtunes. The audio is made from actual seismic data, recorded in Grindavik last year on the 10th of November (when the town was evacuated). Here's a video so you can hear and see the installation in action:

A video with people walking around the installation and interacting with it, gently touching the map and causing LEDs to light up

My partner once mentioned he liked F-14 "Tomcat" fighter jets.

A half a year later he got this shirt for his birthday. I designed an Escheresque pattern, with F-14 and a tomcat wearing a bow tie (because of course).

In the process I learned about tailpipe fire, and obviously the cat had to have a tail... :blobcatpeek2:

There are a lot of stories that could be told about Galina Balashova, the first and only architect of the Soviet space program:
how she designed the interiors of Soviet spacecrafts on weekends after working her main job;
how her architectural decisions influenced the design of the ISS;
how she was stripped of her rights and monetary rewards for the Soyuz-Appolo emblem that she designed…

But for me, the most stunning fact about her work is the one seemingly most insignificant:

To make the habitation sections of Soyuz spacecrafts extra homely, she attached her watercolor paintings to the walls.

The landscapes of forests, rivers and gardens burned to ashes with every habitation module as it deorbited, turning into unintentional performative art. These little pieces of the artist’s soul were so warm and so humane, burning brightly in stark contrast with cold war politics that were as freezing as outer space, where those pictures were admired for the last time.

people, catfolk and furries at #37c3 were naturally (and very understandably) nervous when they saw me pointing a chonky camera in their general direction.

Unfortunately, I couldn't explain and reassure everyone that I'm aware of all privacy concerns and, at events like these, I do not take pictures with humans in them, unless somebody asks me personally.

But, here are some more photos from the conference. 4 days were definitely not enough to explore and absorb all. of. this.

very dark room, spots of lights here and there. in the center of the photo is a cardboard cutout of a cartoon mouse
"infinite mirror", an optical effect that one can create with a strip of LED and some glass. and there's also a cute cat lamp on top of it!

Saw this exciting opportunity advertised on Behance.

No, this is not a joke. This is an actual #clientFromHell who expects the designer to pay for all mentioned software, electricity bills and roof over their head from this generous salary. I can almost hear the "you like drawing anyway so why would I pay more for something that is so fun to do?"

This year I finished one of the most fascinating projects I ever worked on.

Together with a team of researchers from the molecular neurodegeneration department at Amsterdam UMC we came up with a visual and interactive way to present their latest paper on tau protein aggregation and its effect on astrocytes.

#plottwist MDR workers from Severance are actually Calutron Girls. They don't know the purpose of the work they do, they adjust knobs labeled with cryptic characters, and their operations at work make them feel uncomfortable (to say the least). They are not allowed to discuss their work with anyone, and if they start asking questions, they disappear.
