Omg
Our stupid work systems are adding to my stress level by sending me an email telling me if I don't complete past due trainings it will kick me out of the systems within now 6 days.
When I look at the trainings, it is for the introduction to a system that I've been working in since it's inception more than 6 years ago. It's a series of trainings that does not identify how long each block will take, cannot be at all skipped through, and must be physically manned to click "next" for each slide after a voice reads through the entirety of each slide. The 2nd one asks me if I want to pick up where I left off and when I say yes, it says 'congrats you completed'.
There is no contact information for me to say, "look, let's be practical here, I've literally been more than proficient in this system for more than 6 years, why am I being tapped to do exhaustive trainings that I clearly do not need, 6 years later?"

I'm so emotional right now, I want to shout "Lock me out of the systems. I dare you at this point. I actually dare you."

@Waitnwallflower There’s usually a way to trick literal-minded, thick-headed bureaucrats into doing something sensible. Usually. Happy Friday?

@Waitnwallflower I once had to renew my driver’s licence, but they wouldn’t accept the PDF from my insurance company on my phone (which an RCMP officer had recently said was fine). “It can’t be electronic; it has to be printed” was the rule, apparently.

I had an idea.

“Can I email it to you and then you print it?”

They said “yes”.

Is that absurd? Absolutely.

Got my licence.

Gotta think like they do. Compliance is all they value. Dumb-as-fuck compliance is still compliance. 🤦‍♂️🤣

These days watches aren't for everyone. Between phones and fitness bracelets, watches seem redundant.
My watch stopped working about a month ago, and even though I was sure it was the battery, there was nowhere here to get it repaired.
I hadn't really thought about why I wear it, now that I'm retired, until it was broken.
I am pretty sure that this gift from my son makes me feel a connection to his memory. I missed wearing it.
So I shipped it off to Detroit and was excited to see it returned shiny and like new so I could wear it again.
When I look at my wrist, I know it is time for a smile and a happy memory. It feels right to have it back.
There must be a little bit of magic in my Shinola.

@NorcalGma2 nice. few things more personal than a watch you wear daily.

I took my students on a class trip today. Even though they live insanely difficult lives, they were able to enjoy the day with childlike joy.

As one of my “kids” was leaving, he turned around and said, “Today was a really good day.” He’s right; it was..

@Saltssaltgirl bet they remember that day for YEARS. 😎👍

Not going to lie: lately I’ve been wondering if any of my work—podcasting, books, tech writing—is really reaching people. But it’s all worth it on those days when some random listener sends an email out of the blue to tell me just how much I’ve affected them.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@dmoren Hey, Dan; I sent a note like this to @BodyofBreen last week, so now it’s your turn. I’ve been reading your stories — Mac stuff & Galactic Cold War novels — and listening to your podcasts for years! I enjoy all of it, but I especially enjoy your takes on SF film scores (and even pointed out a couple of extended scores on Music back on Twitter). You read my Moonlighting letter on A Complicated Profession last week, so you know I’m not lying. 🤣

This happened to me once at a Superstore

"Customers are fed up with anti-theft measures at stores.

"It seemed like [it took] forever, with people walking by. It was humiliating."

Dennison has found her own solution: She has switched grocery stores. "

@JohnJBurnsIII @MikeImBack Consumers Distributing did this in Canada, too. Been out of business for decades. It was a shitty experience — flipping through catalogs and filling out forms — and they were perpetually out of whatever you asked for.

@JohnJBurnsIII @MikeImBack retail here is bad; Walmart and Amazon have taken over. Home Depot fills the gaps.

    tantramar,

@JohnJBurnsIII @MikeImBack I’m not considered isolated; not even close (there are federal tax exemptions for people who live a certain distance from the largest centre, but that doesn’t apply to me). I’m a 30–40 minute drive from a small city of 100,000. 2–3 day Amazon deliveries are the norm; 1–2 days if you’re on Prime or pay more. But the retail environment of 20 years ago is not coming back.
