I am feeling that urgency again to shift culture to value life over our usefulness. I do believe engaging in some kind of healthy work is a necessary part of being well. But what we do must be secondary to the identity we have in relationship to our community outside the workplace.

Somehow this needs to translate into social and material security. But it can't with dominant meritocratic values.

Federated, p2p, and social technology identifying as decentralized needs polycentric algorithmic moderation.

In polycentric algorithmic moderation, each human combines four things to their personal satisfaction:

① the proverbial firehose of everything, including how the system narrows it down (EG who you follow)
② default filters (EG nsfw or hateful)
③ the moderation preferences of the majority (EG fediblock), and
④ personal preference (EG more this, less that, and absolutly nothing from X)

Note, by X, I mean a variable filled in by the user.

The deskilling of web dev is harming the product but, more importantly, it's damaging our health – this is why burnout happens - Baldur Bjarnason:

@alcinnz really good article. Great points about deskilling. I don't disagree with the final points on Big Tech, but I wish for a different finish.

The New River is the second oldest river on the planet. I’ve only recently come to understand the real significance of the Appalachians. I was born and raised in and around these mountains, and they were always just — you know — mountains.

They reach back something like 350 million years. Predating dinosaurs? Really?

@slott56 ok so the first one was just called River?

The problem with federated alternatives to centralized services (and also one of the main problems with centralized services which lead people to look for an alternative) is Discovery.

Etsy and Twitch and YouTube provide an audience, supposedly. With the right pitch (and the right advertising dollars) you can get your own slice of that audience. (For as long as the algorithm graces you, and as long as you're willing to stomach the other things your viewers will be algorithmically suggested.)

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@ajroach42 search, crawling, curation, and rendering of interfaces to those systems needs to be disintermediated. Individuals need to each have powerful tools for navigating the world they are connected to.

I.E. if "algorithms" are individually chosen and controlled, you don't have a platform problem.

An AI function I would use:
During video calls, generate video of my face that always looks at the camera – not slightly down at my laptop keyboard, or sideways at the cat – in the interest of better interpersonal communication through eye contact.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@FiveSketches 💯 I've been saying that for years.

In my version you get a generated 3D avatar that looks like you (no choice) and rather than streaming video you stream facial expression. You don't have to worry about lighting, your hair, or anything so you can just take the call. No more black screens in meetings.
