LEFT: Stephen Gillers insisting Sam Alito cannot possibly have known that the flag flying outside his home was upside down, and anyone who says otherwise lacks objectivity.

RIGHT: Sam Alito's workplace, with flags in every direction.

Pretty sure Alito knows what the damn flag looks like.

A photo of the interior of the Supreme Court, with real big flags on each side of the bench upon which Sam Alito sits during oral arguments.

Alito's flag is getting more play and attention than I expected. That's good.

Is it possible... and just go with me here a minute... is it just possible that the reason OpenAI's Superalignment team got erased is because OpenAI has realised they are nowhere near anything like an AGI that would necessitate superalignment?

I mean, just a thought here. I'm on these tools a lot and there ain't nothing I've seen that looks anything like AGI. It's all just another deeper pass at automation. Is that deflating the hype? Cor, I sure hope so.

@mpesce I'm pretty sure they got rid of the team because it was annoying to have people tell you the stuff you're trying to build is dangerous and ill-considered.

Bo Burnham is the latest [white] musician asking (by video) why he should vote for Joe Biden?

Are these kids all that stupid? It’s not about who we “prefer.” It’s about the FUCKING ALTERNATIVE? It’s just NOT complicated.

They need to put down their phones, read a newspaper (if they can find one), and figure it out. While they still can.

The notion that diners are more okay with added service charges—in some cases so large they exceed a decent tip—than with menu prices that reflect the actual cost of doing business seems completely insane to me. At the end of the meal, I’m paying the same amount AND it feels like a ripoff.

And it’s not like anyone’s comparing menus on Expedia to see which have the lowest prices—where moving a lot of the cost into fees calculated later on means they’d look like a better deal at first glance.

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@Holberg Service charges? What is this? I don’t see this in Manhattan except for large groups.

Such moral cowards running New York University -- ordering student protestors to write phony apologies.

This is right out of the authoritarian playbook -- and it craps on every notion of freedom of expression.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/17/nyregion/nyu-protests-apology-letters.html

You don't have to agree with the protestors' politics. But you should damn well understand that America is in wave of McCarthyism right now.

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@dangillmor I think it's incredibly dumb also, but the practice actually comes out of the restorative justice movement.

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@dangillmor or maybe it was a bad concept, but yes.

Kind of a different feel today, hard to say exactly why. Not really a Friday, at the very least, but everything feels so amorphous and irregular now with regard to weekly puzzle balance that I almost feel like it's not worth the effort to think much about it anymore. Today's solve music was Crazy Dreams Band's self-titled album (Holy Mountain, 2008).

Johnson serves at Democrats' pleasure. Johnson's statements at Trump's trial were despicable. More than anything, this was a statement from the Speaker that he’s willing to steal the election for Trump, and Democrats should say, “Then you’re out.”

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@lolgop Totally agree. It is in fact immoral for them to continue supporting his speakership.

When social justice protests swept the country in 2020, tech companies mostly welcomed employee activism. The Gaza demonstrations are getting a much different reception. @zoeschiffer talked to folks at Apple, Google Amazon, and Coinbase about it: https://www.platformer.news/tech-protests-gaza-israel-workplace-activism/

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@idan

What if these protests have elements of both antisemitism and legitimate anti-oppression advocacy?

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@idan Okay. What for you would be an acceptable way for Americans (and American Jews) to protest the US government, institutions and economy being used to fund Bibi’s regime?

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@idan ps. you’re absolutely right that Americans barely protested Syria, but they weren’t in any way funding or supporting Assad. And China, well, the US and China aren’t exactly getting along right now. So Israel, as a ‘problematic’ US ally, is fairly unique.

Jonathanglick,
@Jonathanglick@mstdn.social avatar

@idan I think you’re saying, basically, that Americans shouldn’t protest in any way, even if they are horrified by the nature and trajectory of the current Israeli government and governing coalition.

I get it.
