I, a total stranger, was thinking of befriending your kid, but before I did, I thought I'd ask you, are they a boring, selfish jerk?

It's fine if they are, I'm just really trying to find quality people to be friends with, so I thought I'd ask you, is your kid a dick?

Wait, don't get offended! How are people supposed to know whether to hang out with your kid if you can't answer a simple question?!

5/29: What's the average time to complete a writing project between the idea and publishing it?

I'm trad published: production takes 12 months, in lockstep with hundreds of other authors.

Time to write a novel … I started next year's "A Conventional Boy" started in 2009 and finished it in 2023, which is a new record for me. But 2015's "The Annihilation Score" squirted out in just 18 days (then a couple of weeks for fettling and polishing)!

Long term, I average 1.5 a year.

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross

"fettling"? 🤔 This is an interesting usage. (& also, TIL a new word!)

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross

Well, given that the definition references hearths & furnaces, I would deduce that it's an old term.

It's just new to me—which I find delightful & astonishing, given that I have a not-small vocabulary, and yet still run across New (to me) Words fairly frequently.

(Bonus points for English of non-American origin/usage 😊)

It's that everyone I know who has developed terrible new medical issues recently had Covid.
And in every case I'm thinking of, it's become a health crisis within about three months of their most Covid bout. (Usually not a bad bout, either.)

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr

People really have no concept of how involved "functioning in society" is, which is one (of many) reasons why the cult of the "individual" is so pernicious. Most of "privilege" boils down to social connection: navigating schools, jobs (& the job applications), personal finance (which is heavily dependent on having one to learn effective financial skills & thinking from), interpersonal relationships that then provide resources to fall back on in crisis....

& on & on & on. >

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr

It seems like the foster system assumes kids will just pick this stuff up "naturally." They don't put half the effort into preparing kids for the adult world that wildlife rehab workers invest in, say, raising up condors for reintroduction into the wild.

(Of course, that effort presumes awareness of the level of instruction needed, & the impression I get is that foster systems typically struggle just to keep kids fed & housed.)

The reason why we would love to see more accounts talk about composting on the is simple.

You will be able to focus on your area and explain to local people what they can compost and where they can get their organic matter.

You can create a local community that will help your local area make a better place.

If we started this account it is for a main reason. Make people understand that by choosing to compost they can have a positive impact and do something about the .

So creating a multitude of local accounts that will allow people to organize and make their area a better place is a very powerful thing to do for the .

Huge Coronal Mass Ejections, the largest in decades, directed towards Earth took place yesterday and will result in a severe Geomagnetic Storm arriving tonight and tomorrow morning. There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

MERS Outbreak in Saudi Arabia puts health experts on high alert

The pathogen, known as Middle East respiratory syndrome, is a close relative of SARS-CoV-2 but has a far higher fatality rate – 35 per cent of confirmed cases have died, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO expects that less serious and asymptomatic cases have historically been missed, which could also affect the overall case fatality rate.

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

Junk health insurance plans are a bad deal, often leaving people with thousands in medical debt. Junk health care plans mislead consumers and don’t offer real coverage.

Don't have time to read closely so not sure if this angle is covered, but what's pinching me right now is dental insurance. My dentist of 15 years has left the network my work provides, which means I can stick with them & pay $134 for a check-up & cleaning?? (Which is supposed to covered 100%??) out of pocket—or change dentists.

I'm getting too old for this shit.

Edit: I don't even want to think about the next time they want to give me a crown—that's already $650

cavyherd,

::snort:: No. This practice now makes me pay up front, then the insurance sends a check for the portion (about half) that they'll cover.

Yeah, I didn't figure the initiative would cover dental. We seem to have the idea in this society that having healthy teeth is somehow a luxury.
