Many won’t have noticed, but the Fediverse “Trending” (called “# Explore” in the default Mastodon client) is pretty good these days. I use the phanpy.social client, and Trending is something that I now visit every day. Here’s a screenshot.

Something like this is an attachment point for alternative discovery algorithms, one of Bluesky’s more interesting features.

The reason Apple is so adamant about keeping tight control over what apps you can install on phones is that the App Store sucks ass (derogatory) for developers (exploitative terms and ever-changing rules) and users (bad discoverability of apps, ads pushing horrible crap to top of lists) while making Apple a lot of money for little effort—but it's the only way to distribute and install apps so developers and users have to use it.

That's it, there's no other reasons.

Trying out Vietnamese Robusta coffee from an Aeropress. It's actually fantastic. It tastes kind of like chocolate. The aftertaste is surprisingly not bitter but is bright and sunny.

This confirms what I've suspected for years: Robusta gets an undeserved bad reputation. Just because Maxwell and Folgers use Robusta beans doesn't mean Robusta beans are "bad".

You know, I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Robusta could be good because it's used in high-end espresso, and everyone swears that espresso is good -- so why can't that likewise be true about Robusta just by itself?

Anyway, I've had Vietnamese Robusta before but usually made with the metal dripper made in the traditional Vietnamese way -- and that way is incredibly intense. But from an Aeropress, it's truly eye-opening and gives me an easier way to compare the quality of the beans since that's how I typically make most of my coffee.

Periodic reminder that the "Direct Message" / "Private Mention" function here is dangerously broken with confusing semantics.

• Anyone mentioned anywhere in the body of a PM gets a copy.

• "Disabling" PMs in your profile merely means YOU never see messages sent to you; senders can still send them, with no error indication.

• Nothing is encrypted, which means administrators on any instance that processes a message can see them.

I strongly recommend using something else for private messages.
