9 Times the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Miscalculated Badly at the Expense of #Taxpayers, #Wildlife
The agency has a history of diving into big #construction projects that exceed projected costs, fall short on projected benefits and, in some cases, create new problems that #engineers hadn’t bargained for.
I've been thinking about doing a little explainer/how-to for youngsters especially, on how to get into the construction business, and how to protect your health while you're in it. (Because those fuckers will ruin your body for $15/hour if you let them.)
There's a few things to discuss, and this is just me brainstorming.
This could be a game-changer for a queer kid in a conservative family who doesn't want to go to college.
Construction workers are DESPERATE for new workers. Some of them are even raising wages (others are hiring cut-rate subcontractors, but that's another story). It's one of the few areas where automation can't take your job for quite a while and you don't need a degree.
The trick is getting in the door and making them think you're going to fit into the culture there. The main thing for getting in the door is showing up and having some tools. Which tools, and how to get them, and how to use them--that's a big topic of conversation.
Not gonna lie: as a woman, I know I lost out on roughly 50% of opportunities compared to a similarly situated man. But it still saved my life when I was in a really dark place.
I'm looking for folks who have some expertise in #construction. I'm writing a series on #building in the time of #ClimateChange and looking at ways buildings can be safer as the weather gets weirder, and products or approaches that lower the overall carbon footprint of buildings who would be interested in an interview. It would be 15-20 minutes via phone or Zoom, one day this week. Can anyone here help?
“They don’t get much in the way of posthumous glory, but Roman surveyors have left us a wealth of technical treatises, collectively known as the Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum, which is of unique historical importance for its detailed descriptions of the nature of land settlement, and the role of emperors, especially Augustus, in regulating urban centers in a rural environment. Archaeologist David Gilman Romano, longtime director of the Corinth Computer Project, has been using the Agrimensores to understand the rural geography of Corinth and the nature of Roman re-settlement of the city… #GIS#spatial#mapping#surveying#surveyor#survey#instrumentation#ancientrome#roman#history#urban#buildings#aqueducts#roads#fortifactions#construction#engineering#design#archaeology#archaeologist
Top story: In total, the SH 288 tollway #construction resulted in dozens of worker accidents, at least 10 motor vehicle accidents, two of which resulted in deaths, a recent wall failure, a pavement collapse, four class action wage theft claims, and seven lawsuits alleging breach of contract.
Dear people of the Fediverse, a couple of years back there were two retired general contractors that were working in Houston to provide general construction support for owner builders and they posted videos on #Youtube. Since #search has been #enshittified, I can't find them or their business. Any help locating them will be appreciated.
Australia's awareness and response to reduction of greenhouse gases started in 1996. It took until 2003 for the BCA (Building code of Australia) to adopt energy efficiency measures. SO SLOW. Air tightness was introduced in 2019 :ablobwhatisgoingon: 👀 Any slower and the climate is going to melt down around us.... oh wait... #climateChange#Architecture#Construction
Meanwhile in #Bristol, another tower block is found to have structural problems that indicate a major collapse could be caused by fire or other problems....
Increasingly we are reaping the harvest of shortcuts in #construction & maintenance - short-termism is now biting back!
"More than 116,000 signatures supporting efforts to put the #construction of the controversial Atlanta #PublicSafety Training Center on November's #ballot are now public."
It wasn't just signatures of voters who want to #StopCopCity that were posted online. They also posted signer's names, addresses and phone numbers. This is clearly intimidation and harassment! 😠
Cool photo shared by Ironworkers Local 765 on FB yesterday. "Feature stairwell being installed at the Ottawa Public Library project, by members of Local 765 with Lemire Inc."
I can remember when I worked for OPL 20 years ago and they were talking about building a new central branch in a very pie-in-the-sky manner. I'm glad it's finally being built even if I wish they had kept it downtown. #OPL#Construction#Ottawa

Environmental damage, unregulated construction and government policies have exacerbated the effects of global warming and hit livelihoods in a region that reflects and affects subcontinental weather.
…so brick imports via bunker-fuelled ships travelling thousands of kilometres are just one of the many incredibly stupid ways in which, bit by bit, we are bricking the environment which sustains us.
So much YES. Would love to connect with fellow enthusiasts and professionals working in the field, and engage more actively, bringing in my own expertise of working in high end interiors and architecture. If that's you, please reach out, boost, connect.
We OBVIOUSLY can't 'keep on keeping on' and design our built environment like we don't know how fundamentally flawed our design principles and construction methods are.
Let's embrace new aesthetics and look forward, not back. Bauhaus was relevant at the time, it's history now. Let's move on. Let's question every single choice in the design process and make better decisions. Educate our clients. Throw those outdated concepts overboard of what is aesthetically pleasant, what is deemed high-end.
Nobody will enjoy marbled lobbies, airconditioned greenhouse towers and concrete buildings on a dead planet. The future is now. Let's design and build it together!
