I am going to hurt all over tomorrow.

Volunteered for the city to plant some trees in a park today. It's been a LONG time since I picked up a shovel, or a hammer. I knew after just one nail that my wrist is going to be freaking out-- it's such an awkward angle, pinning the straps to the stakes. Very dizzy by the time I got done, after only about 3hrs. Whew. So outta shape.

Also visited a community garden, so now I gotta figure out what to do with a couple of these wacky spiny squash things!

RJ,

@violetmadder looks awesome :blobcataww: wooly bear gourd?

The first kilo.

Up until now there have been the odd ripe tomato here and there, but not more than two harvested on one day.

#GardenUpdate #TomatoReports

RJ,

@coolandnormal love the hashtags! Thanks for sharing your insights. Here's my rescue harvest, brought in today (SE QLD) before the caterpillars got them. So. Many. Caterpillars. (Fruit worms, I believe) had to throw away around a third of fruit that was affected. Hopefully they'll ripen on the counter, otherwise I'll make fried green tomatoes! This is my first attempt at growing more than 2-3 plants, and I think more companion plants to deter the worms might be a good idea next time - thinking Marigolds. Keen to keep it all organic / spray free.

RJ,

@levampyre @coolandnormal I think it depends whether they're raw or cooked / fermented. There's heaps of green tomato recipes out there, so definitely not toxic if prepared right. Different story for different types of nightshades I guess?

Another great read from @LastFarm

"What the fuck is the point of "the economy"? Why do we make all this crap if we don't like it? And if we don't like this economy even when it's "good," what would an actually good economy look like?"

RJ, to architecture

So much YES. Would love to connect with fellow enthusiasts and professionals working in the field, and engage more actively, bringing in my own expertise of working in high end interiors and architecture. If that's you, please reach out, boost, connect.

We OBVIOUSLY can't 'keep on keeping on' and design our built environment like we don't know how fundamentally flawed our design principles and construction methods are.

Let's embrace new aesthetics and look forward, not back. Bauhaus was relevant at the time, it's history now. Let's move on. Let's question every single choice in the design process and make better decisions. Educate our clients. Throw those outdated concepts overboard of what is aesthetically pleasant, what is deemed high-end.

Nobody will enjoy marbled lobbies, airconditioned greenhouse towers and concrete buildings on a dead planet. The future is now. Let's design and build it together!

What is the hydrogen engine good for?

Is hydrogen a suitable drive technology? Major German auto supplier, Mahle, believes that the hydrogen engine is ready for series production in agricultural machinery and trucks. But when it comes to cars, many experts are pessimistic. We take a look.

RJ,

@Hypx TIL you can retro-fit a diesel combustion engine with extra parts to make it a hydrogen engine 🤯

RJ,

@meraord @sebastian @nlarson830 @plants running bamboo is probably what you're thinking of in terms of out of control growth. The species used most commonly for building things are giant clumping bamboo. They grow large, but stay in one place and therefore won't interfere with your neighbors garden or become an uncontrollable invasive species. It has fantastic properties as a material and IMHO is destined to play a key role in sustainable building design, once the code writers can wrap their heads around it.

RJ,

@meraord @sebastian @nlarson830 @plants adding to that, bamboo can help restore degraded land because of its ability to hold large quantities of water (5000 liters/clump) and release it to surrounding vegetation.

Royal visit on our deck this weekend: an Emperor Gum Moth! (Opodiphthera Eucalypti) Check out the wing patterns with four eyes 👀👀 and the fuzzy legs and abdomen! Apparently their caterpillars stay cocooned for a year or more (!) depending on the environmental conditions, and the adults only live for a couple of weeks because they are unable to feed (!!) - they have to rely soley on the energy consumed as caterpillar. Wild!
