Donkey Kong Jnr. almost saw an impressive #BBCMicro release thanks to author of Killer Gorilla, Adrian Stephens. Sadly, when Atarisoft collapsed, the game was canned - but thankfully a final version managed to sneak out into the wild, so you can play it!

#DailyRetroGame 251: Repton (1985)

Reportedly inspired by a Boulder Dash review, Repton took the diamond-finding, rock-falling concept to the Beeb, losing the frenetic arcade pace along the way, but creating something more puzzle-oriented and thoughtful. Sequels followed, including the brutally tough Repton 2 (which neglected to provide enough diamonds to complete its single colossal level) and Repton 3 with its map editor.

#Bolo is a classic tank game that was ported to the #Macintosh from an inital version on the #BBCMicro. Let's take a quick dive into a single-player world to get our feet wet—and maybe try multiplayer next time?

Guess what — Mastodon & @bbcmicrobot are in the news.

BBCMicroBot is a fun bot that started off on Twitter in February 2020 — although it is on Mastodon now.

People send it BASIC code — and it runs it and posts the result!

Many use it to create "pixel-art"

BBCMicroBot migrated over to the Fediverse in Nov 2022, as part of the Twitter-migration.

Name an 8-bit game that triggers instant nostalgia. I'll start... 😁

Elite is 40 years old... the main design inspiration for my game Liberation.

I love that Elite has a great archival scene around its source code (once again the Brits are way ahead)

The aesthetic value of code is a massive ignored philosophy and this scene is a world leader.

Is code art? Code for the sake of code can be art but most code is for a purpose and so is "only" a craft imo.

But some code DOES belong in a museum or gallery!

Bell & Braben’s original Elite. It’s an amazing piece of work. Both by game design and code. 22 kilobytes.

Angus Duggan's Elite-A is a masterpiece of hacking, taking the original BBC Micro version of Elite and extending it with more ship designs, the ability to buy and sell different ships, delivery missions, an encyclopedia and lots more. It is legendary, and quite right too.

But Elite-A was only released for the BBC Micro, and it simply hangs if you try it on a BBC Master.

Until now, that is!

Elite-A contains a bunch of not-quite-finished code that tries to make it work on the Master, so I've extended and debugged this until, finally, it's working. Elite-A's version for the 6502 Second Processor also now works on the BBC Master's internal co-pro, for maximum luxury.

And it’s also available in a version with flicker-free ships, which looks really slick.

Last year I got a from my spouse as a birthday present. It's such a fantastic little machine. Running it natively and maybe the last generation of machines that does? Now with 64bit only Pi5 etc.

Anyhow. I need to explore this OS more and especially BBC Basic which is built in.

Is there any recommended software like particularly good IDE etc. for on RISCOS that I should use?

I'm delighted to announce the release of my latest Elite-related project: the Elite Compendium for the BBC Master.

The Compendium is a collection of the very best of Acornsoft Elite, updated with as many hacks and enhancements as I've been able to fit in. If you're looking to play 8-bit Elite, then this is a pretty good place to start.

You can find out more information at https://www.bbcelite.com/hacks/elite_compendium.html

You can play the Compendium in your browser at https://bbc.godbolt.org/?model=Master&autoboot&disc=https://www.bbcelite.com/versions/elite_compendium/elite-compendium.dsd

The Compendium contains four versions of Elite - BBC Master 128, 6502 Second Processor, BBC Micro disc and Teletext Elite - plus the Elite Universe Editor.

All the games have been updated to run beautifully on the Master, with flicker-free ships and planets, music, and volume control for both music and sound effects.

The BBC Master 128 version also has features backported from the various other 6502 versions (such as Trumbles! red lasers! insta-docking! and more).

Enjoy!
