Paris has revealed plans for pedestrianizing the city that include creating 100 hectares of new pedestrian space by 2030 and transforming car lanes to human-friendly pathways and rain gardens.
Love this part: "walking is free, it's emission-free, it's noise-free, it's good for your health and, as we see every time we pedestrianise, it's also good for local businesses."
The area around Silver Star Mountain is incredible. I needed this trip so badly, both physically and mentally. I slept at the trailhead and got up bright and early to check out the Chinook Trail. I only learned about this trail a couple days ago. Apparently an effort to build a loop trail around Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR.
The first photo is the view from near my camp on Cloudy Pass. Today has been incredible but tough. Hiked 20 miles with 6400’ elevation gain. This is not like the PCT, it’s rough trails that go straight up for hours. But i’m so happy, I wanted an epic long weekend and Glacier Peak Wilderness is providing that in spades so far.
What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?
A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.
Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.
How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?
For those unfamiliar with it, Lemmy is basically a federated version of Reddit, distributed across multiple servers like Mastodon. (For anyone who wants to delve further, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and aussie.zone are three popular Lemmy instances.)
From Mastodon, you can follow any Lemmy group by following its handle, exactly the same way that you would follow a Mastodon account. Any new posts to that group will then begin appearing in your Mastodon feed.
Even better, if you start a thread on Mastodon, you can also post it to a relevant Lemmy group just by including its handle in your post. (Please note this only seems to work with the first post of a thread.)
I apologise if my timeline for the next week is filled with landscapes and scenes from the mountains of the Picos de Europa. I have only just been able to get the images off camera (I know, I'm a bit old school that way!).
The mountains here completely blew me away! Anyway, here's a sample from the week to come. Dramatic peaks, cloud inversions, narrow gorges and beautiful alpine meadows.
I quit Twitter several years ago as it was becoming info overload and not the most wholesome place to be. Maybe this will work better! Finding a balance is no small challenge.
I like a great many things but am learning to focus more on less in my pursuit of a fulfilling life. But here's some of them:
As many of you know, I bailed from my trip early due to stomach issues. Still saw some beautiful scenery in the Three Sisters Wilderness on my very long day. I’m feeling much better so far this morning so it might have just been a 24-hour bug.🤞🏼Very happy to be home. Drinking lots of electrolytes and resting.
I love walking at sunset, the shifting colours in the sky telling stories of light and air.
As I sat in the hill writing, this yowe and her lamb came to join me. There is such a sense of peace and renewal in these moments #Shetland#sheep#sunset#Scotland#writing#walking
Hi Mastodon! I’m a brand new #PeerTube instance dedicated to #urbanism. I don't have much content right now; you can help! Let’s share videos to build more walkable, livable places. https://urbanists.video
I was stunned to see Ponytail Falls when I rounded the corner while hiking this last Saturday. To my knowledge, this is the first time i’d ever seen it. This waterfall is above Horsetail Falls. So cool to be able to walk behind the falls and feel the power of nature.
Happy Thanksgiving from the summit of Round Top in the Tillamook State Forest! Looking forward to spending the day with family and eating some turkey. If you know me, you know I’m excited to try all of the desserts. Out in the forest making room for all the food. After the festivities, I’m heading to the base of Mount Hood to go camping. Sunny but close to freezing all weekend.

“The results show that making streets friendlier for #bikes — and sidewalks friendlier for #pedestrians — is actually good for #business. The rise of #completestreets and #roaddiets, as urban planners call them, has been a huge boon to businesses in #cities”
“survey after survey has shown that business owners overestimate how many of their customers drive to their stores, versus #walking or #biking”
Finding out there's a not insignificant amount of people think that a #15MinuteCity means creating little isolated island prisons is a whole new level of human idiocy that I wasn't expecting to ruin my day today.
Alright fuckers listen up. 15 minute cities are simply a city designed around the basic fucking principles of #urbanplanning and having actual walkable streets so that wherever you are in the city, or wherever your neighborhood is, you have all the basics necessities you need to go about your day within a 15 minute trip. This isn't isolated to singular neighborhoods or "zones". It's an interconnected network accross the entire city, in any place you are, in the city as a whole.
This isn't some new agenda, or just about #ClimateChange or the #environment, it's about designing our cities around human needs and #Community. It's how we used to have our cities before cars took over. If you need to go further, or prefer to go further, you can easily do so by #walking#publictransit or #biking. It's just going to take longer than 15 minutes. That's it. Shocking I know.
Why are people like this? Just take the train you fuckwits.
Mount Hood looks stunning from up here on Table Mountain. I was informed by a frankly terrified-looking day hiker that black bears were seen up here last night. I’m proceeding with caution and will update you if I encounter them. 🐻🗻☀️
I had an amazing weekend, I’m so happy spring is finally here. It’s so freeing to carry everything you need on your back and be completely surrounded by nature. I feel so much safer alone in the middle of the forest than camping along forest roads. I’m considering this spring training while the Cascades are still covered in snow. This trail is ideal for that.
Big if, but if this trip marks the end of backpacking season, I’m satisfied. After setting up my tent at Upper Snow Lake, I couldn’t resist the steep climb up to Lake Viviane to get a glimpse of the Core Enchantments. Incredible! I had psyched myself up for this trip but it’s much better. Spending tomorrow in the core. So excited!
A great way to start a cold winter day is to walk along the Pescara seafront listening to the latest episode of DjangoChat, hosted by William Vincent and Carlton Gibson, with guest Simon Willison 🌅🎧
The episode is long, the first part was very interesting, for the second I'll take another walk.🏖️🚶♂️
'However, figures published this week show injuries on the roads fell by a third in the final quarter of last year compared to the same period a year earlier. After a review, the Welsh government agreed to more 30mph exemptions but insisted that most roads should remain at 20mph.’
The hysteria about 20mph was just that - rabble rousing based on no attention to the details. That included Times reporting.
How do you maintain walking / biking trails in the woods? Recently purchased a home with more than 4 acres of property. The majority of that is fairly dense woods.
