Courtney Gore, the co-host of a right-wing online talk show, won a seat on a Texas school board on the basis that she would undo leftist indoctrination and get rid of educational materials with inappropriate messages about sexuality and race. Then she took office and actually read the curriculum, finding that the subject matter simply taught children “how to be a good friend, a good human.” The Texas Tribune talked to her about why she ran for office, what she thinks is behind the push to take over school boards, and the backlash she's faced since speaking out against the ultra-right element of the Republican party.
The rain did not hold up, so my youngest two had no game last night. Two of their three first games for softball have been rained out this season! Hopefully tomorrow's game is fine.
Tonight is a concert for the Middle School, so I'll be seeing MDMRNia and the Middle School band perform tonight.
A month ago I spent an hour or two going through all of our winter hats, gloves, coats, scarves, and misc crap that had gotten thrown into them. I sorted everything into bins, and labeled them "hats", "gloves", and "buffs/scarves".
Two weeks after I did that, I noticed that someone had put gloves in the hats bin, and vice-versa. The next day I noticed that the buffs/scarves were in with the other two. I mentioned it to my wife, and she shrugged.
A week after that, my wife told me, "I said I wouldn't tell you, but the [#6yo] told me that she keeps switching the labels on the bins. To mess with you."
When I finally lose my marbles, I just want this story in the public record.
According to @Joysauce, fewer women in East Asia and Southeast Asia are choosing to have children — Taiwan has the world's lowest birth rate and South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan aren't far behind (or ahead, depending on your point of view). Jiaying Grygiel takes a look at the societal and economic reasons for these steeply falling birth rates. “People are making a perfectly rational decision about childbearing under the circumstances,” says Stuart Gietel-Basten, a professor of social science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Posting this 👇 again for Australians, as it goes to council in Sydney this week on Weds. Let's get a many signatures as poss 👍🏻
"Sydney councillor Steve Christou has moved to ban childrens' books in Cumberland council libraries talking about same-sex parenting, despite contravening Australian anti-discrimination laws. Christou claims he has widespread support of parents.
Unbelievable curbside find today on my way home from a lovely solo breakfast. I’m sure 2yo will like it fine, but this is the Barbie Dreamhouse of my dreams.
The neighbor who helped me load it up said it’d been sitting there for a few days, but I couldn’t bear to leave it for 10 minutes to go home to get a different vehicle in case it got snatched up by someone else. Turns out I didn’t have to!!
Age restrictions on books for toddlers/small kids are not to protect the kid from the potentially disturbing content, but to protect the book from being torn apart 😅
"Through our phones, we are under perpetual surveillance by companies that buy and sell data about what kind of person we are, whom we might vote for, what we might purchase, and what we might be nudged into doing."
The weather is entirely going to determine how my evening goes.
My youngest two have a softball game scheduled and I'm an assistant coach. But, rain is incoming so that may be cancelled. Also, my oldest has a school band concert.
So, wet weather - I go to the concert. Dry weather, I go to the game.
Same sex parenting.

A moving song about the endless-and-yet-ending relationship between child and parents, hugged by mellotron over a driving drum and tense saxophone. Merrill's incredible voice fills up everything.
"We all have doubts.
We all have rage.
We all have trouble being brave enough to turn the page.
Roomsharing can be done following safe infant sleep guidelines, which includes:
Placing the baby to sleep on a firm, flat sleep surface; in their parents’ room for the first 6 months on a separate sleep surface designed for infant sleep, close to the parents’ bed
Keeping the baby’s sleep space free of soft objects, such as pillows and loose bedding
Tonight is supposed to be my twin 9 year olds' first softball game, but the weather has been so wet, I have a feeling it'll be cancelled. We shall see.
If it is, and it's not raining, I'll try to practice with them a bit tonight.
