What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

Walking through Griffintown and again I’m reminded what a hostile place it is if you’re on foot:

• Tonnes of construction blocking sidewalks
• Lack of pedestrian crossings
• Fast moving traffic and aggressive drivers
• Car parks galore
• Pollution level off the charts!

There are some charming corners if you know where to look, but my god it’s in desperate need of that promised REM station.

You think it’s close to Gare Centrale until you try and walk it.

We--my partner, my kid, and I--have 2 days left to decide whether said kid stays enrolled at her neighborhood elementary school or enrolls in a specialized gifted education program that offers services she very much could use in a different school.

There are pros and cons. But the thing I can't get over is that the other school--the only place in the whole district where these services are offered--is in a no walk/no bike zone. As in kids are literally banned from & there.

Today's activities:
2km of warm-up #walking (21 minutes)
5km of #running (39 minutes)
24km of #cycling (69 minutes)

First run in four months. New shoes worked nicely, though I apparently need to lift my feet more. Run was slow, and I’ve clearly lost a lot of my fitness, but I can build that back. Slowly. It's good to be back to running.

Let’s get personal, shall we? I’ve been here a while now, and as I’m feeling quite comfortable at Mastodon, I’d like to share a bit more about myself beyond my passion for the climate and the environment.

To begin with, I’m a male, he/him, hetero, strongly supporting LGBTQ rights. I’m a baby boomer, born at 312 PPM 🌏, a United Statesian, although I lived in Europe (mostly Hungary) for several years, and traveled extensively for work before retiring in 2012. I’ve never been good at sustaining long-term romantic relationships, and I’ve finally settled into comfortable singlehood.

I like to say I’m made of contrasts.

For example, I’m rather funny and quite personable, but I don’t enjoy small talk and I hate parties. I currently live in the Bible Belt, but I’m an outspoken atheist. While I can easily fit into most social situations, I don’t feel comfortable around large groups and prefer being alone most of the time. I live near two huge military bases, but I detest the USA’s militaristic, troop-worshiping culture. I’m almost always cheerful, which masks my deeply felt existential nihilism. I’m a neat freak, but also rather lazy, preferring fun over work.

I’ll finish up with some hashtags to add flavor...

Third day of going for a "run" every other morning after not exercising for...more than a year? Maybe 2? I'm walking most of the route, but hopefully I can start walking less of it soon.

There is not a of funds for in the US. We spend tens of billions every year on construction and maintenance. That's a policy choice.

We could choose instead to pay for other things, like robust & comprehensive supports for and .

Don't let anyone tell you there's not enough $. We have gobs of $. We just spend it to subsidize the least economically rational form of transportation.

Glacier Peak Backpacking: Day 1

The first photo is the view from near my camp on Cloudy Pass. Today has been incredible but tough. Hiked 20 miles with 6400’ elevation gain. This is not like the PCT, it’s rough trails that go straight up for hours. But i’m so happy, I wanted an epic long weekend and Glacier Peak Wilderness is providing that in spades so far.

131 KM of
3,247 seconds of (average 147)
535 (Average 67)
68 minutes of (Average 8.5)

I expect these numbers to fall dramatically in February; I’ll be off on a special project three days a week, plus a week (we’re shooting a movie- Shhh!).

I haven't figured out how to track the stuff yet; per exercise feels like it will add a lot of columns. Maybe number of exercises/time?

It should not take three minutes to cross a road

Yet as @DrTCombs shows in this video, many road crossings are designed to make pedestrians wait at least that long before getting a walk signal.

This video shows one such crossing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but there are many more intersections like this across North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

I was nervous to deal with liquid insecticide (intense warning label) but I successfully treated my hiking clothes with Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellant. I used the soak method, which involved using rubber gloves to dump the insecticide on my clothes inside large Zip-loc bags. The pants didn’t really soak up the liquid very well so sprayed them after as well. Once soaked, I hung them to dry on my back porch. 🤞🏼this works. Will test them out this weekend.

Tuesday: 122 seconds of plank, 11 minutes of yoga, 30 minutes of HIIT, 21 minutes of strength, followed by 6.5 km of #walking (7°C with wind gusts to 32km/hr).

The strength training really kicked my butt this morning, probably because @TAV picked it. 🤣

I was hoping for my stroll pace to get under 9 minutes/km, but not quite. I'll blame the wind. Knee felt okay, will resist running to Monday.
