Before they will let me publish a new release of XScreenSaver on the "Play" [sic] store, Google, the most rapacious privacy violator ever, insists that a screensaver have a privacy policy.

This is where you come in!

I'd like this policy to be a series of bullet points: "Unlike Google, XScreenSaver will not [Thing.] An endless, concise catalog of their sins.

I need both your snark AND a link supporting your snark. It's critical for the joke to land. Include both.

GO!!

I don't normally post personal updates, but I'll make an exception in this case...

If anyone wants to help out by getting something off of our baby registry, I'm sure our soon-to-be daughter will appreciate it. My wife and I will. 🙂

So, I have the feeling that the #fediverse is a very left-wing dominated space. Let's see if that feeling is correct.

Please boost for reach.

It boils my blood to hear folks insinuate that is the source of their performance problems and they should switch to microservices in another language to fix the performance issues. Maybe spend a little bit of time figuring out where your bottlenecks are and fix those, first!

(This may or may not be a sub-toot.)

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@preinheimer This is usually the case for developers who rewrite things in a different programming language, too, so it’s rarely the programming language itself that made things more performant.

I have used for over twenty years. I know it’s power and I’ve seen it mature as a first class language.

Haters will hate. But PHP is one of the most powerful and versatile languages in the world.

From CLI to web and everything in between, PHP can do it. You can and should feel good about choosing PHP for your project.

Latest version of #HTML standard includes a warning that advises against using the #XML syntax (formerly known as #XHTML), stating that it's "essentially unmaintained"🧐 :

https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/xhtml.html

Looks like a recent change, as there's no mention of this in the April 3 version of the spec:

https://web.archive.org/web/20240403210532/https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/xhtml.html

Unless I'm misreading it, this seems like a big deal? E.g. XML syntax is mandatory in #EPUB 3 documents:

https://www.w3.org/TR/epub-33/#dfn-xhtml-content-document

I know $12 USD is a lot of money for some people, so to celebrate 1000+ sales (!!!), I'm giving away 1000 PDF copies of How Git Works (honour system: only if $12 is a lot for you!)

Here's the link, enter code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free copy https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

(it'll ask you for a billing address but you can enter a fake address if you'd prefer)

I was going to post “the 1000 free copies of How Git Works for folks who can't afford it have all been claimed, I'll release more when we sell 2000 copies"

But then I went to check this morning and we've already sold 2000 copies of the zine??? So I guess we're giving away another 1000 copies now. https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

I'm gonna share some completely anticlimactic TMI for the benefit of other middle-aged men:

The day before yesterday, I was very stressed and anxious for a variety of reasons, and we were moving some furniture out of a storage locker, and I was feeling lethargic and a little lightheaded and generally out of it, and then I began feeling nausea and indigestion and my jaw was tight and then my left arm and hand started feeling a little numb. Nothing terrible! Just: feeling meh, and those minor symptoms.

And then guess what crazy thing we did?

We went to the nearby emergency room.

Yep.

And they were very nice to me, and quickly administered an EKG and blood tests, and guess what?

I wasn't having a heart attack.

I was just stressed and tired and anxious. That's all.

But if I had been having a heart attack, going to the E.R. could have saved my life. And even though I wasn't, they were very nice to me. No one made fun of me. No one called me a whiner or a hypochondriac. My wife expressed gratitude that I took my survival seriously. And I was home again in less than two hours.

So this is for my fellow typical men, who are inclined to ignore health issues because: John Wayne or something, and fear of embarrassment:

Don't ignore stuff. Don't wait until you're sure. Be willing to overreact. Be willing to waste everyone's time. It's okay! The world won't end! (And you may even get to take a nap under a warm blanket, like I did!)

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.
