He/him. Web engineering leader deep in community building & education who thinks PHP & hypermedia are great. 🚀 Scourge of every toxic leader who had the misfortune to meet me.

Once upon a time someone studied when the most effective time of week was to send fundraiser messages and decided it was Tuesday afternoon.

Now EVERYONE sends them then in an hours-long torrent, making it the worst possible time to send one.

Is this a real thing people using Tailwind do because this made me actually lol at work

linc,

@hbuchel My impression is that using CSS well requires specialized knowledge, which our industry is actively trying to squelch with the labor arbitrage of "Javascript everywhere" so everyone has the same skillset. Enough folks have drank the Kool Aid on this they have a critical mass and don't understand they're undercutting their own labor by devaluing others' experience.

The Web has decayed into a sad sack of shit since Covid, and I feel like Mastodon’s one of a few lifeboats trying to avoid being smashed on the modern Scylla & Charybdis of enshittification and labor arbitrage.

“Amazon has launched a new ‘one-click to quit the union’ tool, and they’re relentlessly pushing it to every worker in their Coventry warehouse. […] If a worker scans the QR code and clicks the link, Amazon’s software automatically generates a letter from the worker and then emails it to the trade union, ending their membership.”

A legal challenge to some gnarly union-busting tactics that Amazon’s deployed in one of its warehouses in the UK: https://www.foxglove.org.uk/2024/05/02/legal-challenge-to-amazon-uks-new-one-click-to-quit-the-union-tool/

@beep I’d like the names of the engineers that built this tbh. Let the world know the work they did.

It's funny how bad Google Workspace's tools are for transitioning employee data given how much they enjoy firing people.

This is part of the reason I couldn’t get to a good place (mentally) in order to do a real “Saving Open Source” talk at :

From @geerlingguy: “2024 is the year corporate open source died”

@ramsey I worked for a company that used GPLv2 with a CLA precisely so they could relicense. It's the "rules for thee, not for me" licensing tactic, used for when startups are concerned about their ability to sell out if all their code is GPL-bound. You basically use your accrued CLA rights to publish a "new" copy that isn't encumbered. I forked a GPLv2 project from that company but I don't have the CLAs so my fork is GPLv2 forever.

linc, (edited )
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Basically, you need significant contributions outside the company under the GPL without a CLA for it to "stick" — at least, that's my understanding of prevailing legal theory. I don't think most license strategies have been tested in court because they turn into protracted Google v Oracle messes because suddenly the entire industry cares.

Considering that every year we have a new ambitious replacement for #npm in the JavaScript world, @naderman and @seldaek apparently did a very good job when building and maintaining #composer for #php. Thanks a lot to you two and everyone else involved.

@muhdiekuh Agreed! I also like to believe the ecosystem aged out of the "prove how clever & right you are" phase. 😅 We're all out here like,
"amazing, thank you, now I can work faster" not "huh, bet I can do better, hold my beer".

@ramsey I had the same problem 4 months ago when my work laptop upgraded to Sonoma. The amount of searching it took to find that link the first time was infuriating. It's in this directory https://developer.apple.com/download/all/?q=Command%20Line%20Tools%20for%20Xcode

linc,

@ramsey I have no idea why they are forcing logins for the xcode CLI tools now but it sucks and they implemented it badly to boot.

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Ah, sorry. I did as well but mine went missing in the upgrade and I had to reinstall. I got the same nonsense message about Software Update but that flow didn't work until after I upgraded the dev tools.

When did “investor” become synonymous with “extractors”?

Extracting wealth by using wealth to create more wealth.

Some people will say that investors have always been 100% exclusively interested in “return on investment” but I’m skeptical 🤔

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@heycaseywattsup Ever read Netscape’s founding story? They raided the university team building Mosaic and stole its ideas wholesale. They extracted all value with hype then discarded it. A few engineers rescued the engine and made it into Firefox. And that was the start of the commercial Web. It didn’t get better.

@Lyle @waldoj Yeah, I frequently use the ol’ bottled water thru the Keurig trick to get not terrible hot water for tea.

I’m enjoying their music, but can someone explain the meaning behind the name? Is something lost in translation? It literally translates to “bump of chicken.” What does that mean?

@saki, can you help? 😁

@ramsey They also did two great opening themes for March Comes In, a powerful anime about a gifted teenage Shogi player dealing with grief and emotional abuse. I’ve run into them a couple times since in other animes’ openers I’m forgetting.
