@VModifiedMind as it's just calls over copper going away and internet access over that same ancient wire continues.. I can't see any benefit in keeping telephone access via it. My grandad, 99, has been on SIP for about a year now. The improved call quality has been a real help.

@VModifiedMind I can only speak for locally but alarms with SIM + Internet seems to be the default around here now and work reliably. I assume there was a cost to the owners to move from old monitoring.

Lifts, good question.. though I suspect similar or SIM only. Again not free to change equipment.

There was a cost at my grandads too. The cost to go fully IP rather than plug his old BT base into the routers ATA.. but that was in the effort to obtain the best call quality possible.

@VModifiedMind congested ADSL.. that's a tricky one and needs skill and correct routing OS to apply reasonable packet scheduling to allow calls to be OK during heavy upload or download.

@VModifiedMind for me I think it's caused by too much to do, all of which I like doing, and not enough time to do it all to the quality I would like. Each job imperfecly completed adds to the feeling. And no end in sight or obvious solution to workload.
(Though I suspect the answer is to say No more often to requests).

@JohnBarentine @reedmideke My one definitely saw disruption on Friday and Saturday overnight (UK time). I've never seen a 5+ second outage reported in the app before but over the weekend there were many!

How does TNT Sport (previously BT Sport) get away with charging £31 per month (via Discovery+ now BT have dumped the sport brand)!
(£28 per month to Sky customers).
I've never really looked into sport channel costs until now but that seems beyond expensive to me, what do others think?

@bloor Wifeface and I would very much disagree. Friday night we went to a rural cricket pitch. It was so subtle at first then over an hour and increasingly the colours and streaks were stunning. Almost like an old cartoon or film where god appears from behind a cloud streaks from the sky ending in colours. What my eye saw was better than what my phone could pick up. (which seems the contrary to what others or the news report?).

In 2021 #ThamesWater replaced our water meter with a "Smart" meter. Since then.. they've estimated 6 out of the 7 water bills they've sent since. They last did an accurate reading in 2022! What's the point in wasting cost, effort and earths resources on something they don't use.

Mind bogglingly stupid. Intel invented a storage technology which ... doesn't record any persistent logs about disk failure or activity..
"Once any version of Intel® RST is installed, there are no event logs. Once Intel® RST version 17.x (and above) is installed, there is no way to get system reports. This is currently in the works by Intel engineering; however, Intel® Customer Support does not have an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for this."

#OVH having huge problems on the hypervisor one of my VPSs is on.. can't manage more than about 100mbps down, and 200mbps up - when data is being used the pings up to about 200ms.
If I run "date" on a loop in bash it manages only about 4 to 10 commands per second.. compared to @beasts VPS which manages 870!

OVH support being beyond useless and appearing to not want to do anything until office hours tomorrow unless I upgrade to have better support coverage.

Insane.

Now whatever event on their host is over I can do 500+ date commands per second and manage the full 500mbps the server should be limited at! It's going to be ok for around another 12 hours then it will break again.
