>Graves claimed that the opportunity for soldiers on both sides to commit "true atrocities" only occurred when escorting prisoners of war to the rear lines. "Nearly every instructor in the mess", he wrote, "could quote specific instances of prisoners having been murdered on the way back. The commonest motives were, it seems, revenge for the death of friends or relatives, jealousy of the prisoner's trip to a comfortable prison camp in England, military enthusiasm, fear of being suddenly overpowered by the prisoners or, more simply, impatience with the escorting job." Similarly, "If a German patrol found a wounded man, they were likely as not to cut his throat." However, if POWs arrived at their destination, they were treated well during interrogations.[4]: 131, 183–184

>In the book, Graves stated that Australian and Canadian troops had the worst reputation for atrocities against German POWs. He recounted two first-hand anecdotes from a Scottish-Canadian and an Australian, who told him how they murdered German prisoners while escorting them using Mills bombs. Canadian soldiers were motivated to commit atrocities against POWs due to the story of "The Crucified Soldier", which Graves and his fellow soldiers also refused to believe. He also added that the use of "semi-civilized coloured troops in Europe was, from the German point of view, we knew, one of the chief Allied atrocities. We sympathized."[4]: 184–185

killer whales only stopped ramming ships in the 1900s and resumed again recently, when I was a lot younger it was sometimes claimed that orcas ramming ships was a sailor myth even though there are several recorded cases

> “Outrageously” priced weight-loss drugs could bankrupt US health care
Prices would need to be dramatically slashed to avoid increasing the national deficit.

Wait why is the government paying for it? You're telling me Medicare/Medicaid will fight like hell to not pay for things people need to live but suddenly they're willing to pay top dollar for weight loss drugs for every obese American?

it doesn't make sense

I mean, if you're going to take the whole "the grinder is the most important part of the equation" thing seriously, why not prove it. ;)

Rancilio Stile grinder paired up with a Breville Bambino Plus. The PF almost sort of works in the Stile's PF holder. 7.1sec gives 17.5g dose.

cc @espresso

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@coffeegeek @espresso I've never been able to trust grinder dosage so I always weigh each dose and put it in the hopper instead of keeping the hopper full of beans

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@lawyerjsd @coffeegeek @espresso when I owned a cafe that was our method too. Every day lots of single dosages weighed out into little cups. Seems tedious but every shot pull was almost identical

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@iris @coffeegeek @lawyerjsd @espresso I thought it was mostly oxygen, hest, and moisture that were the real enemies. I assume natural sunlight would have an effect because UV is powerful, but I can't find a single study that talks about light causing "photodegredation" or whatever to coffee beans so I consider that to be a myth until I get more data

There's a lot of bad financial advice on the Internet presented as 'life hacks'. They target people who have a deep insecurity around financial best practices, and then traps them into learning and doing terrible things that are not good for financial security.

So much of the financial industry is heavily regulated, but lifestyle content pretending to be financial advice isn't.

Damnit I hate GBICs. Two of these fuckers can look identical but one won't work in a specific switch because it's tagged with the wrong vendor or doesn't support some obscure feature the switch vendor stopped supporting.

Just a thought… Wouldn’t it be nice if capsicum in could be used in such way that you didn’t need to alter binaries, but from e.g. daemon(8) which would jail your binaries with the restricted capabilities

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@mpts @rvstaveren if you just want to use jails for all services you can modify rc.subr to add a new jailing feature where it just shares the same root filesystem but all the services you specify are in a jail with some lowered capabilities and it behaves like a cgroup in that fashion

I wish some people took this seriously and pushed it as a core feature because it would rule

Does anyone happen to know if it is possible to get a projector for an open space at ? I have some ideas that involve discussions of code where it would be useful if a participant could share their screen with a larger group.

Good to see this, but this is very true:
"public industry specification for these Bluetooth trackers that have been around for over three years now says they care more about profit than protecting people – they'll get around to the safety features as an afterthought,"

Tracking devices and stalking were problems years before Apple brought the airtag to market and was a known problem to anyone who looked at news about them, but Apple chose profits over people's safety.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@encthenet Apple already had this feature though, and I don't know how you can design a better / more secure system without getting every possible device/OS to support a standard protocol like the one they just got Google to support as well.

Now let's pretend that Linux phones start gaining marketshare. How many years before someone develops code for them to do the same?

Should the product really be banned from the market over safety fears? Wouldn't we also have to ban every GPS tracker on the market too?

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@encthenet There's also tiny tiny phones like the Zanco T1. add a small external battery, hide it in someone's belongings, and you could stalk with this too. Modify it to wake up occasionally and SMS you its GPS coordinates.

should this phone be illegal because of the potential for abuse? when does it become government overreach?

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

I was at an amusement park thing here in Florida and one of the attractions was fake electric chair with a prisoner sitting in it with a bag over their head.

"Pay a dollar to make 'em holler!"

You put in a dollar in the machine and the guy screams and jumps/writhes while being fake electrocuted to death for a couple minutes.

Incredibly distasteful and disgusting, but at least the fake prisoner wasn't in drag, right?

Attached video is one I found online from a couple years ago, the one there now is much louder and more "violent", I guess you could say.
