@sun @solidsanek wish the profiles also inherited network settings as I have a need for specific content to go through a SOCKS proxy right now

@triodug it's on Yoshi's Island which for some people looks like the island from Far Cry, but yeah all the gamers are there hanging out

Our voice phone systems are seamlessly federated. You can call people across carriers, over national boundaries, instantaneously, and the only friction is slightly more numbers to dial.

@evan the UX sucks. Make a good UX. Nobody actually cares about the protocols being used, they care about the experience.

What does open source need to solve it? Money. It takes money to get UX right. It's a lot of work. So open source needs a business model and a circular economy to fund it.

@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@hj @evan I know you would work on it 24/7 if you could afford to live off that work. This is the dilemma

Pollution Paradox: How Cleaning Up Smog Drives Ocean Warming

New research indicates that the decline in smog particles from China’s air cleanups caused the recent extreme heat waves in the Pacific. Scientists are grappling with the fact that reducing such pollution, while essential for public health, is also heating the atmosphere.

"Until recently, ships’ aerosol emissions probably cooled the planet more than their greenhouse-gas emissions warmed it."

@zorinlynx if you want everyone to pay the true cost of energy it's going to create absolute chaos because people do not understand the consequences of that

Making a single industry pay extra for energy is problematic on so many levels, even legally questionable

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@zorinlynx Renewables are already cheaper than fossil fuels in many situations so it doesn't make sense for all our increased electricity consumption* to fall back on fossil fuels

*which is not really as much as they want you to think -- really, honestly... almost zero increase in consumption in the USA over the last 20 years. How? Efficiency gains.

We will survive this, but we can avoid going through future cycles of this in our lifetime if we push for better fiscal policy (turn off the damn money printer, stop doing ZIRP) and remove subsidies on fossil fuels

Remember, just replacing the power lines with more efficient conductors gives us a ton of new energy to work with that is currently being lost/wasted. If we can recoup that waste we get to have all of this with no additional footprint.

You: making computers do more work (AI, LLM, crypto)

Me: making computers do less work (only using a shell, turning off useful OS functionality because it consumes a couple megabytes of RAM, writing everything in C, using the slowest computer I can find with the lowest carbon footprint, using plaintext protocols because math is a waste of resources)

we are not the same

feld,
