> Raivo OTP just deleted all tokens after update and is now asking for money

Who the fuck is Raivo and why would you trust their app with your TOTP tokens ?

Why do you have no backups?

Who even are these people?

Brainstorming about the possibility of local-only deletes in Pleroma because the Fediverse will continue to grow so large that federating a Delete with a level of confidence it will be successfully received where it needs to is trending towards zero and deletes themselves are poorly justified DoS on the network

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

this is sort-of where Nostr wins on the design side as for things like this it feels like the better solution would be to have servers (optinally) subscribe to a feed of deletes and process them at their own leisure. The problem there is ensuring that the feed isn't bombarded with junk by a nuisance/attacker, etc etc.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

shit, actually an RSS feed of deletes is not the worst fucking idea I've ever heard of... am I crazy @lain ?

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

I think one of the biggest hurdles with the fediverse is the idea that things need to happen in near-realtime instead of with eventual consistency

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

Being able to go back and forth quickly is nice but expecting deletes/retractions to also happen realtime across the ENTIRE Fediverse and not just to your original intended target audience is impossible; the audience changes as it gets boosted so you have to announce to EVERY server you know about to

PWEASE PWEAZE delete this post if you have it

Using an LLM to get a poor quality answer to a question is much less of a waste of resources compared to running a full size oven to cook a frozen pizza

~1.2kWh for pizza (2400 watts for 30 mins)

1.7Wh for an LLM query. So you can ask ChatGPT 705 questions before you've used as much energy as it took to preheat and cook your DiGiorno Rising Crust pizza

"But the pizza provides nourishment", you say

It's about as nourishing to your body as garbage AI answers are to your brain.

@TURBORETARD9000 using the waste heat of a datacenter to cook pizzas would be baller

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@TURBORETARD9000 oh I definitely fuck with the Baron

but if you ever get a chance to pick up some of the high end Palermos stuff like Screamin Sicilian it's worth it (❤️ Wisconsin)

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@TURBORETARD9000 I honestly don't know why waste heat of datacenters isn't turned into some kind of business opportunity

Just build a little strip mall thing right next to the datacenter, pipe the heat over, run a goddamn pizza delivery business and bakery out of it

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@TURBORETARD9000 we are now connected by this unbreakable bond

mind you, this doesn't even get into the energy cost to produce, package, transport, and keep frozen these pizzas

The average person only makes 3-4 internet search queries per day. If they switched all their searches to whatever the most power hungry AI model is that exists it would still harm the planet less than their frozen pizza habit

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@mattskala the glue, the cardboard, the vacuum seal bags, the transportation of all these things...

our $34T of national debt is "borrowing against the future"; crypto, NFTs, and AI are just beneficiaries of an age where energy and compute have become cheap. If you want them to be constrained you will need to fight for the end of energy subsidies and make everyone and all corporations pay the real cost of energy.

IMO we need to dismantle the surveillance advertising biz model & the surveillance and centralized control at its heart.

But this doesn't do that. Instead, it advocates for 'transparency' w/o accountability + inexplicably ONLY names e2ee encryption as a "risk" to children.

What's clear here, broadly, are the sharp limits of shareholder-driven activism when it comes to curtailing a toxic-yet-profitable business model.
