Why row from Boston to London? Because it’s there.

Spaulding Rehabilitation physician, team taking new route, aim to set records

"If we’re successful, we’ll be the first human-powered crossing from Boston to the U.K. We will also be the first mixed crew (in terms of gender) ever to cross the North Atlantic. We’re hoping to break the North Atlantic record for speed."

Pollution Paradox: How Cleaning Up Smog Drives Ocean Warming

New research indicates that the decline in smog particles from China’s air cleanups caused the recent extreme heat waves in the Pacific. Scientists are grappling with the fact that reducing such pollution, while essential for public health, is also heating the atmosphere.

"Until recently, ships’ aerosol emissions probably cooled the planet more than their greenhouse-gas emissions warmed it."

As sea level rise accelerates, #Boston is ‘deep into overtime’ to build coastal protections by 2030

Sea level rise in Boston broke a record in 2023. It’s expected to get worse soon.

"Generally, the city envisions a response that resembles a long jigsaw puzzle: small and varied projects that lock together to form one continuous flood barrier. All together, the projects would cost several billion dollars."

Here's the container ship Ever Fair, tied up this morning on the Reserve Channel in South Boston.

Boston Towboat's A team (Independence, Justice, Freedom & Liberty) helped guide her out for her next stop, New York.

At 1095 feet long, the Ever Fair is slightly bigger than the Dali, the ship that hit the Key Bridge in Baltimore last month.

Great to finally be back on Boston harbor!

Much debate about how people would get there. Sailboats?

For public transportation, the nearby Orange Line is best known for the woman passenger who jumped from a burning car into the Mystic.

And have you ever seen a waterfront park with so little imagination?

Coastal dunes are retreating as sea levels rise - our research reveals the accelerating rate of change

In some parts of Australia, coastal dunes are retreating from the ocean at an alarming rate, as waves carve up the beach and wind blows the sand inland. But coastal communities are largely oblivious to the changes.

One big reason that Boston is less prone to ship/bridge catastrophes than Baltimore is that we require tugs to accompany big vessels.

You can witness the astonishing everyday competence of Boston Towboat tugs as they bring 600-foot tankers in and out of Chelsea Creek.

People need to read more old books.

This is from one that's near 50 years old and explains succinctly why replacing humans with AI is bullshit--even if the AI can think on the same level as humans (current AIs can't, and will likely never be able to).

(Weizenbaum was a computer science professor at MIT and famously invented the ELIZA bot, so yes, he knows what he's talking about.)

Based at UMass Boston, the Stone Living Lab (https://stonelivinglab.org) explores nature-based approaches to climate resilience and ecosystem restoration. 2 projects of note:

  1. Cobblestone berms designed to stabilize beaches.

https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/f43cf8b5e3b8411d98ce597585981250

  1. Living seawalls, "an ecosystem-friendly surface [installed] on the hard structure so that it becomes a viable habitat for marine life." These will be tested at East Boston's Condor Street Urban Wild and the Seaport's Fan Pier.

Not sure anyone has tried to change the name of a harbor island in the past century. Guess that at least the town that claims the island (probably Quincy here?) would have to agree.
