Damnit I hate GBICs. Two of these fuckers can look identical but one won't work in a specific switch because it's tagged with the wrong vendor or doesn't support some obscure feature the switch vendor stopped supporting.

@zorinlynx A coworker of mine bought a programmer that lets him modify the vendor ID and other attributes on an SFP.

@frosty @zorinlynx holy shit those exist? (I'll bet he had to go to AliExpress to get it ;o)

Now I'd only restrict that to my own gear, but really these should be available to the enterprise!

@zorinlynx this burns my ass with SFPs (and GBICs before this). Cisco, Arista, Intel, Juniper and others burn their vendor IDs into the SEEPROM on an otherwise bog-standard Avago or Finisar part, and then all except Juniper refuse to work if their vendor ID isn't there. (Juniper just states "non-Juniper" but STILL WORKS)

Intel won't load the module unless I pass an option to use unsupported transceiver. On some Cisco, I can use "service unsupported-transceiver" but I shouldn't need to!
