The PHP Conference Kagawa, which will be held from today, will be held in the park of the Takamatsu Castle ruins. This building was once the residence of the shogun family that ruled Kagawa.

This structure, called a yagura, is a symbolic part of the structure of a Japanese castle and serves as both a watchtower and a storehouse.

It's not uncommon for conferences to provide food and drinks to attendees, but PHP Conference Kagawa will be serving unlimited udon noodles. Udon is a common noodle in Japan, but the people of Kagawa are known to be particularly udon fanatics.

Twenty years ago, I was obsessed with Japan's unique mobile network called PHS (personal handy-phone system).

It's been a long time since I lost interest in communications engineering, but it's strange that I'm still writing PHP.

Why wasn't personal handy-phone PHP? That's because Konosuke Matsushita, a legendary businessman who is revered in Japan, published a magazine called “PHP”, so he refrained from using it.

As we all know, PHP:Hypertext Preprocessor became popular in Japan around 2000, so reservations became meaningless. 😜

Many people may have never heard of the place names Shikoku Island or Kagawa. Shikoku is the fourth largest island in mainland Japan. Kagawa is a prefecture located in the northeast. This area is especially famous for noodles called "Udon".

A national ID is required to sign a contract for a mobile phone line, but it appears that you can sign up for a SIM card for travelers by showing your passport. For example, a SIM for Softbank can be purchased at a Softbank shop or a consumer electronics store (such as Yodobashi Camera).

Docomo and KDDI do not offer services for travelers, but several MVNO companies seem to sell prepaid SIM cards. These tend to be slower than the official services, but the network backend is the same.
