This is bullshit, because:

  1. You need a TFR (total fertility rate) of 2.1 to maintain stable population (no growth, no shrinkage).

  2. UK's TFR is 1.75, so shrinking ~15% per generation.

  3. Which means, not enough workers to support the retirees.

  4. Net-positive immigration is the only thing propping our economy up.

5.The UK NEEDS immigrants, or we're fucked.

This is the truth, unpalatable to racists molly-coddled by generations of crooked right-wing politicians.

Adding: the tighty-righty racists might counter this argument by saying "moar white babies, plz" … but the fact is, the reproductive age generation are hamstrung by student debt and such expensive housing (renting properties or buying in a market inflated by pensioners' investments) that they can't afford to start families.

Native population growth won't save the UK unless we crash the housing market and make education free again. Which are also unpalatable to the elderly voters.

Things you could do on top of the harm reduction strategy of voting:

  • Unionizing
  • Radicalizing your union
  • Joining or forming a mutual aid organization (not "tossing $20 around via gofundme," organizations)
  • Building a tenant's union
  • Running for office/getting referendums
  • Doing 5calls and showing up at elected representatives townhalls
  • Talking to your neighbors, baking them a pie

Again: you have 365 days that aren't election day this year. What are you doing with them?

Bike parking: build these. Just these. That’s it. These stands can accommodate any type of bike. And you can lock the frame to them.

Don’t build ones where only the wheel goes in. Don’t build anything where the mechanism can go wrong.

I know this is boring. But IT WORKS!

Edit: to those going “they can be cut and taped and bikes stolen” - I know. Do I care? No, not really. Tell me a type of rack that can’t be cut with an angle grinder!

For me, the main lesson from OpenAI trying so hard and failing so badly to buy Scarlett Johansson's voice isn't tech industry's arrogance or dishonesty, it's their insecurity.

When your entire business model is a con, of course exploiting a famous work of fiction to shape the public perception of your product is going to take precedence over law, ethics, safety, and technical excellence.

#Russia embassy in Poland boasts of ‘rebuilding Mariupol’. Only it omits a minor detail - the Russians are not rebuilding #Mariupol in the sense of renovating or rebuilding existing buildings for their existing residents.

What they do is demolishing existing buildings and raising new multi-family houses in their place, offered on the open market, which are unaffordable for existing residents…. because no one will give a mortgage to a person whose flat has been demolished! Residents rendered homeless by the Russian army are thus left in the lurch, as can be seen from the many desperate appeals they publish on Telegram.

The Mariupol authorities also officially run a housing restitution programme but, in typical Russian government fashion, they use many tricks to make it a sham - for example, the new buildings have a slightly different address and plot number and the allocation is no longer ‘due’! Or it turns out that the person in question still has a (also ruined) allotment garden, so as a ‘holder of two properties’ the return of the flat is also ‘not due’!

Such ‘reconstruction of Mariupol’ thus has the character of a exploitative colonisation of the city by the new owners rather than a real reconstruction of the city, and on top of that it only concerns attractive plots of land near the sea and in the centre. Hundreds of blocks of flats in popular bedroom neighbourhoods have remained without water, electricity, without windows and with holes in the roofs for two years.

P.S. I can provide numerous appeals from Mariupol residents on request

has declared an intention to unilaterally extend its territorial waters on sea in a way that collides with territorial waters of and . Russian Ministry of Defense (!) proposed to cancel the 1985 decision of demarcation of the sea borders and redraw them according to “new geographical references”, and then declare them “internal waters”.

Obviously, this looks very much like a poorly disguised attempt to create an strategic dilemma for by unilaterally opening a territorial dispute with two NATO members without really invading anyone yet. In case of NATO inaction the next step will be Russian actually enforcing their “new territorial waters” by threatening or sinking ships sailing to Finland and Lithuania. And if the inaction continues, the next step will be likely establishing “new geographical references” on one of the land borders of NATO countries.

So…there is a concerted campaign, with Musk as its mouthpiece, to discredit Signal and get people to switch to Telegram. It’s disinformation, but there’s also useful information in it. The useful information is that a hideous, powerful, right-wing crank — or whoever’s yanking his chain — really, really wants people to use Telegram.

We’ve long known Telegram’s security is weak. But now, in light of this new information, we should move forward assuming that Telegram is actively compromised.

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

Memory errors in consumer devices such as PCs and phones are not something you hear much about, yet they are probably one of the most common ways these machines fail.

I'll use this thread to explain how this happens, how it affects you and what you can do about it. But I'll also talk about how the industry failed to address it and how we must force them to, for the sake of sustainability. 🧵 1/17

In April, Ukraine defender Denys Zeleny took this photo of his workplace, the battlefield of Serebeyansky Forest in the Luhansk.

48 hours ago, Denys was killed in action. His colleagues write

"Defending Ukraine, our hero Denis Zeleny died during the fighting. There are no words to express all the pain of losing this person. A real warrior, defender and friend. Forever in the ranks."

Let us help Ukraine win.
Let us end this war.
