Amused at how Altman helped himself to a woman who denied him multiple times, because he was fond of her*, and despite the fact that she was literally the only person in recent history to sue Disney and win - and that no one else in his circle tried to dissuade him (or had enough pull or made enough effort to be successful).

Says a lot about the people at the helm of the "AI revolution".

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why Slack is hiring remote, but only in a handful of states, none of which are California?

I thought they were part of Salesforce now, which definitely has offices in California

The fact that Sholes teamed up with Remington to sell his keyboards makes total sense.
Not only because duh, Remington was exactly the kind of company that knew how to make reliable machinery with small accurately milled parts, but because the keyboard is a weapon.

I think it's cute that some abstract algebra texts start with a review of set theory (Herstein), some start with a review of matrix math (Artin), and just one decides to review a little set theory and then introduce categories (Aluffi).

(I'm vaguely reading all three)

Not sure if it's ADHD or what but at my present level of intellectual maturity I really like to compare different approaches to a subject, analogously I like to learn different things that share some common conceptual space

Reminded at random of one of the books that got me really interested in theoretical computer science, Kearns and Vazirani's An Introduction to Computational Learning Theory, mostly because it talked about machine learning in terms of computational complexity.

Not sure if I still have a copy, curious if I'd like to reread it

We lost Gordon Bell on May 17th. He was the architect of the PDP-4 and PDP-6, and a major contributor to the PDP-11 that all computers are now required to pretend to be.

This 1975 article - "What have we learned from the PDP-11" - is an interesting read, both for the history and in the present.

It's amazing how much changed in compilers within the next decade or so (Chaitin's Algorithm, static single assignment, are the ones I can think of, I'm sure there's much more)

It's interesting, how some (mostly pretty late transitioning) trans women hold on to a masculine pre-transition self. There is nothing wrong with that, it just made me think of my own journey of self-perception. I started from a similar point. Different maybe only in that I absolutely knew I never had a "male identity". So this schism between "the man I was" and "the woman I am now" never existed in this clear cut way.

This lead to a slowly fading concept of separation. Nowadays I think and talk about myself in my pre-transition time mostly in female form.

And every "not Sasha" idea has this stale scent of mothballs. Like a costume that has been hanging in a closet in the attic for too long.

As a chemist weirdo I actually like the smell of naphthalene (the stuff in mothballs), but not each and every day around me.

@sashag Conversely, I find it difficult sometimes that it's hard to legibly approach post-transition masculinity because people will parse it incorrectly as insecurity with femininity, which it could be, but if they knew how much discomfort I had with masculinity, pre-transition, they'd understand 😂
