If you're not aware, Mastodon 4.2 will directly break relay.fedi.buzz, the relay many small instances like mine use to pull in posts from other instances based on hashtags used.

This is a massive degradation of small instance ability to participate in many hashtag-based social activities like #Fensterfreitag #Monsterdon #TCMParty #HashtagGames and so on.

A: You can limit who can send you DMs/PMs! You can also limit notifications!

B: You can also block a site entirely for yourself.

2: Instance administrators:

If you don't want to block threads.net entirely, consider these options for your userbase's safety:

A: Between "Full federation" and "Suspend" there is LIMIT, which hides content from an instance unless a user either follows the user posting it, or searches for it.

B: There is also "Reject media," which means you never cache a remote site's attachments. This de facto makes all such content sensitive ("unavailable"), requiring an additional click to view.

Hey, #mastoadmin - anybody else had search stop indexing? This is a very-small-user-count instance and I don't use search much and I've just noticed that new results haven't been being indexed in since October 28th.

Elasticsearch is happy and running fine. But I am seeing this in sidekiq:

If you say "1.5 degrees celsius" most will hear one of two things:

A: 1.5°F, which they will further reduce to "nothing," because you can't really feel it. "A degree or two" means nothing.

B: ZERO, because they hear "small number I don't understand."

USE. FAHRENHEIT. AT. AMERICANS.

For real. "2 degrees (C)" means "basically nothing" but "4 degrees (F)" is "huh." It's something Americans know they can feel. Americans know the difference between 68F and 72F.

So I beg you:

Stop. Using. C. At. Americans.

Use. Fahrenheit.

I just saw a post that made me realise the importance of something I should’ve realised months ago:

Unlike on the birdsite, or #Facebook, you don’t have to make your posts performative in order to trick an algorithm into showing them to your own followers.

That’ll happen every time, since it’s just chronological. You don’t have to write for advertisers or engagement optimisation or gods know what else just to have your toots be shown to your own friends.

You can just write whatever the hell you want and that will happen every time.

It’s not just the ads or the owner’s political agenda that’s different.

It’s that you don’t have to perform for the machine.

So I get annoyed at all the hypocrites who put “Woke AF” or “Antifascist” or “ally” in their bio, but then can’t be bothered to do the bare minimum on here by labeling images with AltText for those with vision impairments.
If you struggle to come up with AltText, you can use the Alt4Me hashtag; there are many ppl on here who will write it for you. Then you just edit your toot and copy-paste it into the text box after hitting “edit” on the image.

oh wow okay this is a huge bug they're fixing in activitypub for wordpress and it's pretty likely it's also the cause of my problems with federation stopping working every so often:

Also, Russian propagandists are praising Elon Musk, and his defence of Putin, Elon declaring him not a "bad guy" despite taking dictatorial control, making LGBT people illegal, legalising domestic violence, assassinating most of his political opponents and imprisoning the rest, and so on. Elon thinks he's just doing what's right for his country.

This is Elon's idea of what's right for a country. Take notes.

2: What are the feeds?

"Home" is who and what you explicitly follow

"This server" is everyone on your instance

"Other servers" is everyone followed by anyone on your instance.

3: #Hashtags are important here, and can be followed. To do so, search for one, then click the "add" icon in the search results bar.

4: Follow (and unfollow) with abandon! Follow people who boost a lot, that helps you find stuff. But you can also follow people and choose not to see their boosts, see first photo.

My next fascism watch is going to include this article and add a little discussion, but I think it was under-read and under-discussed when it came out so I wanted to give it a standalone boost.

It's about how Trump is working to disrupt and dispute the 2024 election, starting by getting Republican states to exit ERIC, the voter-registration comparison system that's been in use for many years, in favour of EagleAI, a system basically designed to create many false reports of duplicates. The intent is to create room for false claims of mass voter fraud to be believed as plausible as he contests the outcome, should he lose.
